Why Would They Put Their Feet on Ice for Hours?

It’s that time of year again… The harsh summer heat makes the work of our heroic medical staff and volunteers even more challenging than it already is, taking off their protective suits drenched in sweat, exhausted from examining thousands of patients. 

Luckily, some caring organizations and kind citizens in Beijing have sent help by virtue of ice cubes placed under their feet to keep them cool throughout the day.

Air conditioners and beds have also been provided in addition to those “resting ice cubes” to make their working environment as comfortable as possible. 

When interviewed, one of the volunteers admitted feeling “a chilling sense of coolness coming up” while resting her feet. 

Water sprinklers and fog cannons are used three times a day to cool both the ground and the air, as well as outdoor air conditioners and watermelons. 

The most beautiful part of this effort has been seeing neighbors delivering iced water to medical workers, at their own expensive, to express their appreciation for their work and support them throughout this difficult time.

“Even if they don’t drink it, just holding frozen mineral water in their hands can help keep their body temperature down,” said one caring citizen. 

When Ms. Liu Ning, a restaurant owner, learned that the test site was situated closed to her business, she didn’t think twice and decided to bring 4 outdoor air conditioners to cool down all medical staff on duty.

“They start working at 9:00 AM, so we make sure to bring out the units after 8:00 AM,” she told reporters.

Those are kind acts like these that show the beauty of society and human connections. Together, we can fight and survive.
