A designated clinical facility managed by a special medical team to treat COVID-19 patients infected with the Delta variant has been set up in Shenzhen after the local government announced four cases of the new variant in the city. 

The city will treat separately all COVID-19 patients on Air China flight CA868 that triggered Shenzhen's new wave of infection, Ju Changping, deputy head of Shenzhen's health commission, announced on Wednesday.

Ju said that patients will be transferred to the designated area once there is a confirmed infection with the Delta variant.

Shenzhen local authorities announced on Tuesday that four COVID-19 patients were confirmed to be infected with the Delta variant showing a virus genome sequence similar to that found on patients from the Air China flight. 

As of Tuesday, the city had administered 20.96 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, with 71.42 percent of the city's population having received two doses.
