3 people organize gathering with more than 2000 people, arrested
Some crazy esports fans went a bit too far in enjoying the 2021 League of Legends World Championship (Worlds 2021), which was held on Saturday and China's Edward Gaming (EDG) team claimed the victory during the final.
Three people have been arrested for organizing an unapproved large-scale party livestreaming the popular esports League of Legends (LoL) World Championship with more than 2,000 participants on Saturday in a square of a main street in Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei Province, media reported.
Citing a decision by the local police, Chinese media outlet The Paper reported that the three organizers have been arrested for holding the event without permission from the public security authorities, which caused security risks.
One of the organizers surnamed Wu shall be detained for 10 days and fined 500 yuan ($78.2).
Video clips showed that floods of esports fans gather in the square crowding in front of a screen to watch the live broadcast on the electronic screen, and wave flags and shout in support of the teams on Saturday evening. "The internet collapsed on the street [at that night]," said a resident, media reported.
In the final, the EDG team defeated the defending champions DK from South Korea with a 3-2 win in a tough battle from Saturday night to early Sunday morning and set the best record in the team's history, immediately drawing netizens' cheers of joy and trending top on Chinese social media.
However, some crazy fans went a bit too far. A video of several fans walking on the street naked to celebrate the victory, and another showing many shouting with joy from a residential building and disturbing other residents made rounds on social media.
