Dr. Yao gave a lecture on the Seminar of Green Economy and Environment Protection for Developing Countries on November 10th.The topic of the lecture is The Development of Intelligent City in China.

The lecture was divided into four parts. The first part introduces the development of cities and the improvement and innovations of infrastructures in city. While urbanization brought new problems and required for new infrastructures, the construction of smart city began to deploy a lot of modern technology infrastructure.Thus, the second part introduces the proposal and development of smart city in different countries especially in developed countries in the world. For more than 20 years of exploration, developed countries have completed a set of informational  infrastructure to support a city to be smarter. For developing countries, the challenge is the simultaneous development of urbanization, informatization and digitization. So when the concept of smart city came to China, the practice has developed the connotation of smart cities. It is more likely to be intelligent city. In the third part, Dr. Yao took Hangzhou City Brain as an example to introduce what intelligent city in China is doing. Traffic congestion treatment scenario ( why is the data of how many cars running on the road more important than the data of how many cars in one city ), “check in 30s in hotel” scenario(cooperation with data among the different departments improves work efficiency,while the hotel can operate with fewer receptionists but more space), and “two mountains bank” scenario (certain mechanism to transforming natural resources into commercial resources), show how the City Brain uses data to change the allocation of urban resources and the mode of urban governance.The fourth part is the outlook for the future and further challenge for intelligent city, like how to improve data quality and quantity with data safety.

After the lecture, participators showed their interests of intelligent city in China, and discussed about the worry of unemployment that smart city might bring. It is inevitable that new productivity will lead to reform. All we need to do is to keep learning. And the government and city constructors should remember their original intention, that is to serve the citizens in city.

Seminar on Green Economy and Environment Protection for Developing Countries is hold for officials or staff from governments, non-governmentalorganizations, scientific research institutions, enterprises, universities, etc. engaged in green economy and environment protection and other related fields. China and the organizers are  National Research Institute for Rural Electrification (NRIRE), Ministry of Water Resources/ Hangzhou Regional Center (Asia-Pacific) for Small Hydro Power (HRC)The seminar is convened to present to and share with the participants Chinese practices and proven cases in the field of green economy and environment protection. The seminar also aims to enable the participants to come up with constructive advice on green economy and environment protection of their own countries after attending the seminar, thus promoting the development in related fields in all respective countries.
