About the Exhibition
艺术家王成宇成功地将中国古典意象与当代性的绘画技法相融合，又一以贯之地强调轻松幽默的画面性格。这种幽默和调皮呈现在完成的画面里：利用刮刀产生的利落笔触，作品线条极爽快，人物姿态极放松，叙事极简炼；也实现在艺术家创作的过程里：有时只因在画材店里遇到一个喜欢的颜色，便拿回来试试，设背景，添人物，在近乎 “玩乐” 的状态下，完成对一幅新作的探索。千里走单骑 Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles, 2018, 布面油画 Oil on canvas, 150 x 180 cm
画面中常见的戏曲人物，源自艺术家青年时代移居北京后对京剧产生的喜爱。而在生、旦、净、末、丑之中，艺术家更爱丑角。不仅因为他 “最有趣”，也因为他最 “放下”。人们不伟大的一面，以致不光彩的一面，常由丑角承担表现。而丑角的 “化解” 或 “回应” 方式是幽默与自嘲，是心态的松弛，是对意义的消解。骑摩托的丑角、眼神戏谑的花旦、姿态顽皮的老生，似乎都抱着松弛的心态，以玩笑（玩世不恭）的方式应对各自的故事。而丑角，似乎最能帮助艺术家传达这种态度。回忆 Memory, 2018, 布面油画 Oil on canvas, 40 x 60 cm
在戏谑与幽默之下，艺术家的 “较劲“ 是：探索油画与丙烯颜料的写意性。曾长期服务于结构、写实、焦点透视的油彩，在王成宇的创作中探索性地转化为表意的、禅意的散点透视画面风格。艺术家致敬以八大山人为代表的东方 “写意” 艺术的同时，愿意继续赋予作品“禅意”。这种禅意，可以上溯至唐代壁画，宋代米友仁，并因油彩的“姻缘”，而一路联系至西方的浪漫主义与现代艺术。此外，艺术家对古典意象的创造性运用，亦为当代观念艺术的实践。在此情境下，艺术家酣畅趣味的绘画语言转变为跨文化的视觉信号，借以表达自我，并接近当下的观众。（宏藝空間）

The Chinese word “趣 (Qu)” indicates a humorous atmosphere, and the meaning of “意 (Yi) " here is the spiritual connotation of freehand brushwork and Zen in the Oriental art tradition.
As an artist, Wang Chengyu successfully integrated Chinese classical artistic conception with contemporary painting techniques, and consistently emphasized the light-hearted and humorous style of his works. This style is embodied in his paintings: the neat strokes created by scrapers, straightforward lines, relaxed character postures, and simple narrative. It is also realized in the artist's creation process: sometimes just because he found a pleasing color in the paint material store, the artist would take it home, set a background, add characters, and complete the exploration of a new work in a state of "playing for fun". 自拍 Selfie, 2019, 布面油画 Oil on canvas, 60 x 90 cm
The characters from Chinese operas in his works came from the artist's enthusiasm for Peking Opera after moving to Beijing in his youth. Among the 5 types of roles in Peking Opera, the role Chou (the clown) is the artist's favorite. Not only because it is "funny", but also because it is the most "carefree" one. The mundane, or even disgraceful side of a person is usually undertaken and expressed by Chou, who uses humor and self-mockery to resolve or respond to it. This is a relaxed state of mind and a disintegration of meaning.
From the Chou on a motorcycle, to the Dan (the young female role) with a joking glance, to the naughty Sheng (the main male role), they all seem to be relaxed and playful about their own stories. But Chou appears to be the best character to convey the artist’s attitude.

In the context of irony and humor, what the artist "strives" to achieve is to explore the freehandness of oil paintings and acrylic paints. Based on the long term application of oil paint featured on the structure, realism, and focus perspective, Wang Chengyu made a breakthrough and transformed into the style of ideographic, Zen, and scattered perspective in his creation.
Apart from adoring the freehand tradition represented by Pa-Ta Shan-Jen, the artist is willing to continue to present the "Zen" style in his work. Wang Chengyu’s Zen style can be traced back to the murals in the Tang Dynasty, Mi Youren’s ink paintings in the Song Dynasty, and through the application of oil colors, it can be associated with Western romanticism and modern art eventually. Moreover, the creative application of classical images by the artist is also considered to be a practice of contemporary conceptual art. In this context, the artist's lively and fun painting language is transformed into a cross-cultural visual signal, thereby realizing self-expression and approaching the current audience.
