Title: Impact of different test conditions on the thermal runaway characteristics and gas release for lithium-ion batteries

报告摘要 | Abstract

The increasing use of lithium-ion batteries and fast pace of cell development requires further efforts in safety testing and that the effects of the different test conditions are understood. There is plenty of data from thermal runaway tests in literature, however few are from larger test series. In addition, the fast pace in cell development, including an increasing utilization of larger cells, necessitate the validation of previously published results. The work performed presents data from 37 tests on one type of large prismatic lithium-ion battery cell (157 Ah). Tests were conducted in both closed (in a pressure vessel with inert atmosphere) and open setup (exhaust collector hood). Further, different thermal runaway trigger methods as well as different states of charges was investigated. It was shown that the trigger method and state of charge has an impact of the gas production rate, mass loss, as well as the maximum temperature of the cell. 

Additionally, large-scale vehicle fire tests as well as battery module and pack tests have been carried out to analyze and compare the combustion gases and scaling effects of small-scale and large-scale tests. The effect of different test conditions for small and large-scale tests are of great importance when it comes to safety testing and evaluation of lithium-ion batteries. Emphasis is put on the gases produced, a key aspect for safety evaluation.





嘉宾简介 | Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Jonna Hynynen is a research scientist at Research Institutes of Sweden, RISE. Her research is focused on topics related to fire safety of lithium-ion batteries. She holds a PhD in materials chemistry from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. Dr. Jonna Hynynen has published several papers, is co-owner in two patent applications and has had both national and international collaborations. She has a strong background in chemical analysis and materials processing from both academia and industry.
