A Gentle Reminder: BJ's Elm Pollen Season to Begin in Most Areas
Spring
As spring approaches, the humidity in Beijing is relatively low, with ample sunlight and rising temperatures. This creates prime conditions for plant growth and the inevitable onset of pollen season. In Beijing, spring allergies are primarily triggered by pollen from woody plants, including elms, cypresses, pines, and willows.

Beijing Meteorological Service Center has issued a forecast based on the monitoring data of the pollen for elm trees. According to the results, most areas in Beijing will experience the start of elm pollen season around early to mid-March.
According to the staff at the Beijing Meteorological Service, starting today, there will be a surge in pollen levels this spring. On weekends, the pollen count may soar to over 300 grains per 1000 square millimeters. The research results indicate that when the pollen count surpasses 150 grains per 1000 square millimeters, half of the individuals sensitive to pollen may start to notice symptoms. When it exceeds 350 grains per 1000 square millimeters, over three-quarters of the individuals are likely to experience symptoms. It's recommended that people allergic to pollen wear masks when participating in outdoor activities.
It's important to take precautions against pollen allergies. Beijing Meteorological Service Center indicates that pollen concentrations are high between 10:00 and 17:00 every day, heightening the risk of allergic reactions outdoors. Sensitive individuals are advised to avoid outdoor activities during these periods.
Throughout the pollen season, those allergic to pollen are recommended to check weather conditions. Substantial rainfall and wind force at level 4 or higher help lower pollen levels.
Individuals prone to pollen allergies are also recommended to wear masks and sunglasses when going outdoors. If exposed to high levels of allergens while outside, rinse your nasal passages upon returning home.
For severe allergy symptoms, consider using pollen-blocking agents, or seek a doctor’s guidance for medication treatment.
