How Many Big Macs Can a Journalist Buy with Annual Salary?

China’s Journalists’ Day is coming! As a journalist, how do you plan to celebrate your day? Having a day off?Going out to do interviews?Or staying up late to write articles?

It's true that the profession of “journalist” seems to be losing its appeal in China, largely due to long and irregular working hours and low wages. Is this really the case across the world? Newstopia compiled the average annual salaries of journalists in the following 16 countries and regions in 2023, according to the latest data from well-known recruitment websites, such as Glassdoor and Indeed. Find out where you can make more money as a journalist?

Swiss journalists earns the highest annual salary: US$97,000

Time of counting: November 1, 2023

Among the above 16 countries and regions, the average annual salary of journalists in Switzerland, the Central European country, is as high as US$97,000, ranking first, and 50% more than the second-ranked Denmark (approx. US$60,000). The third place is Norway (approx. US$55,000), which ranked first in the 2023 World “Press Freedom Index”, followed by France (approx. US$48,621) and the United States (approx. US$48,599). In Asia, journalists in Singapore have the highest average annual salary of nearly US$40,000, followed by South Korea (approx. US$37,547) and Japan (approx. US$36,203). Hong Kong ranks 12th, with the average annual salary of journalists about US$33,000. The average annual salaries of journalists in Taiwan and the Chinese Mainland are less than US$20,000, ranking last among the 16 countries and regions.

Hong Kong journalists can afford more than 10,000 Big Macs per year, ranking third

However, because the cost of living varies across countries and regions, the average salary level of journalists is not sufficient to reflect the real value of their wages. Therefore, Newstopia used the “Big Mac Index” released by The Economist in July 2023 to simply measure the purchasing power of journalists' salaries in various places.

Although Big Macs in Switzerland are the most expensive in the world ($7.73 each), journalists there can still buy around 12,528 Big Macs, with the highest purchasing power among 16 countries and regions. Japan (11,421) comes in second. On the other hand, Norway, the top 3 in the average annual salary, only ranks 12th with a purchasing power of less than 8,000 Big Macs.

Journalists in Hong Kong can buy around 11,265 Big Macs, ranking 3rd in the above list. Although the average annual salary of journalists in Hong Kong is not high, the price of a Big Mac there is only about US$3, hence the purchasing power is relatively high. However, compared to Hong Kong’s property prices, the annual salary of Hong Kong journalists is still a drop in the bucket. According to the International Housing Affordability Report released in 2023 by Demographia, an international public policy consultancy, Hong Kong ranked first for the 13th consecutive year as the most unaffordable city in the world, with the average price of permanent housing in Hong Kong Island surpassing 186,000 HKD per square meter in 2021.

Super Rich journalist earns more than US$10 million a year

It is generally believed that it is difficult to “make a killing” as a journalist, but there are those who have made a fortune by doing news. Anderson Cooper is an American journalist and television host who has been in the industry for nearly 30 years. One of his well-known roles is being the anchor of the news program Anderson Cooper 360° on CNN since 2003. With reference to the latest information, Cooper's annual salary from CNN is about US$20 million. Diane Sawyer, the famous American television news reporter who has interviewed many famous figures such as former U.S. President George Bush and former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, earned annual salaries reaching US$22 million. She currently works for the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
