University of California, BerkeleyBerkeley

This is actually a very interesting question because Berkeley was actually my dream school prior to the application season. My top 3 schools were Berkeley, Harvard and UCLA but during the application season, and after getting deferred by Harvard, my perception of US colleges changed a bit and some other schools like Columbia and Duke made their way to the top of my list. But after all my applications came out, I realized that Berkeley is the perfect fit for me because of its proximity to Silicon Valley and its location in the high tech center of the world. When I got the offer, I was absolutely enthralled because a third party had acknowledged the effort I put in for the last 4 years and given me a chance to pursue my passions further.02你是怎么和CIS结缘的呢?
The CIS program was introduced to me by my college counselor. I was interested in the program because it was a non-linear way to learn Biology, meaning that you weren’t spoon-fed content like standard school classes. You did research by yourself and I wanted that experience prior to college.
I did not know Dr. Kunes before the course. I chose his course because I’ve always found the human brain to be especially interesting. It is the most mysterious body part because of the intricacies associated with its study and I wanted to pursue that as well with a professor at a world-renowned lab.

I was expecting to read a lot of journals before entering the program and I was absolutely right. Prior to CIS, I actually interned at 2 separate Biotechnology companies just to get some first-hand experience on more complex biology terms.
The biggest skill I gained from CIS has to be the ability to synthesize information. The large amount of reading we were supposed to do greatly increased my ability to figure out unknown biology terms and concepts while also allowing me to take information and apply it elsewhere.
I think CIS helped present me as a student that has dipped his toe into the professional biology scene. It shows that I’m not just a mindless robot who’s only capable of regurgitating information, but a critical thinking scientist that can propose and prove new hypothesis.

Yes, Dr. Kunes gave us oral feedback almost every day. General tips on improvements and research directions were among some of the things he talked to us about.

We met many challenges during the writing of our final research paper. Most of the issues were related to the fact that this was the first time any of us were writing a professional paper so to overcome these problems, we had to communicate with each other while at the same time utilizing the knowledge of Dr Kunes and the internet.
“If you feel like you’re the smartest person in the room, then you’re standing in the wrong room” I think this quote is a great reflection of what students should do with their application. Aim as high as you can with a few safety’s and accept where you land. Because truly competent individuals will always succeed no matter where their education starts.
