The Qixi Festival

The Qixi Festival, also known as the Qiqiao Festival or the Girls’ Festival, is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month every year. It was originally a festival for women to pray for blessings and needlecraft dexterity. Later, as the love story between “The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl” spread, it gradually took on romantic connotations. By now, it has become the “Chinese Valentine’s Day”.

The Qiqiao Festival

In ancient China, the Qiqiao Festival was a women’s festival, in which women prayed to the Weaver Girl for wisdom and ingenuity in their needlecrafting. The customs include the previously mentioned praying, making wishes, worshiping the Weaver Girl, eating a snack called Qiaoguo, painting fingernails, and competing in needlecraft, such as needle threading.

Needle threading is the most common way of praying for needlecraft ingenuity, involving passing five-color silk threads through a row of embroidery needles in the moonlight.

Qiaoguo

The main raw ingredients of Qiaoguo include oil, flour, sugar, and honey, which are thoroughly mixed mixed, kneaded into various shapes, and then deep fried.

The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl

The Cowherd (Altair) and the Weaver Girl (Vega) were originally known as two constellations facing each other across the Milky Way. Later, in the writing of poets and writers, they gradually developed personalities and a poignant love story.

The Weaver Girl from heaven secretly came down to the earth and fell in love with the mortal Cowherd. However, they were deemed in violation of the heavenly regulations and forced to separate. They could only stand across the vast Milky Way, longing for each other in silence. Their devotion moved the bird god, who then rallied countless magpies to bridge the Milky Way, so that they could meet briefly on the Magpie Bridge on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month each year.

The painted screen is chilled in silver candlelight,

She uses silken fan to catch passing fireflies.

The steps seem steeped in water when cold grows the night,

She lies watching, heart-broken stars shed tears in the skies.

—“An Autumn Night”

Written by Du Mu,

the Tang Dynasty (618-907)

Clouds float like works of art,Stars shoot with grief at heart,Across the Milky Way the Cowherd meets the Maid.

When Autumn’s Golden Wind embraces Dew of Jade,All the loves scenes on earth, however many, fade.

Their tender love flows like a stream;Their happy date seems but a dream. Can they bear a separate homeward way?

If love between both sides can last for age,Why need they stay together night and day?

The Qixi Festival is a festival about love, a most profound and elusive emotion, as depicted in a plethora of verses since ancient times. “Love leaves one itchy with longing even for a short separation.” “Profound love does not necessarily mean being together day and night.” “Unrequited love offers the most forlorn sight.” “If only I can live in happiness with my beloved forever!” “As I take your hand in marriage, I pledge lifelong devotion.” “A whole decade has gone by since your departure, yet I cannot help but pine for you unknowingly.”

On the day of the Qixi Festival, we’d like to wish you all the best and a happy ending for all those in love. Please tell your beloved: “Tonight, I don’t care about the world; I care only about you.”
