Summer Workshop1:Arts of Our Ancestors
When we think of art and art history, we may think of paintings of Renaissance masters, works of European Impressionists, or ink paintings of Song artists. However, art history dates back to much earlier than just these. Our ancestors have been creating paintings and sculptures for thousands of years. In fact, the oldest known drawing that is made by homo sapiens dates back to 73,000 years ago!
During this workshop, we will learn about the mysterious cave paintings, carvings, and clay figurines made by our prehistoric ancestors. We will discover ancient art from all around the world, including the wall paintings and hand stencils of the Chauvet and Lascaux Caves (France), Bradshaw Rock Paintings (Kimberley, Australia), ceramic figurines of Jama-coaque culture (Ecuador), and frescoes from the Catalhoyuk Neolithic settlement (Turkey).

the wall paintings
and hand stencils
我们将浏览两个联合国教科文组织世界遗产:Chauvet Cave(可追溯到30,000年前)和Lascaux Cave(可追溯到17,000年前)。
On Day 1, we will learn about the wall paintings and hand stencils left behind by the hunter-gatherer peoples of Europe tens of thousands of years ago. We will take a look at two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Chauvet Cave (dates back to 30,000 years ago) and Lascaux Cave (dates back to 17,000 years ago).
On a large paper, first, we will recreate the hand stencils found in the Chauvet Cave using the same technique that our ancestors used. Our ancestors used hollowed bones to blow natural pigments on the walls and used their hands as stencils to create these images. During our class, we will imitate this technique. However, we will use food coloring rather than natural pigments and straws rather than animal bones!
Then, we will use soft pastels to add animal drawings in the style of Lascaux Caves to create a unique "cave painting" of our own.
On Day 2, we will take a look at the frescoes made by the Neolithic settlers of Catalhoyuk. Catalhoyuk was a large agrarian community that flourished around 7000 BCE in modern-day Turkey. It housed approximately 5000-7000 people, and many of its residents decorated their houses with paintings that possibly depicted the daily lives of the Catalhoyuk community.
During our lesson, we will draw inspiration from these paintings and similar paintings found in other Neolithic settlements around to world. Then, we will use a modern artistic technique called linocut to create printed images based on our impression of these ancient artworks.
On Days 3 and 4, we will discover an ancient native South American culture called Jama-coaque culture. Jama-coaque culture is best known for its unique ceramic figurines and vessels that were probably created as ritual objects. We will use clay to create our Jama-coaque inspired figurines.
On Day 5, we will learn about Bradshaw Rock Paintings (also known as Gwion Gwion rock paintings) that were created by indigenous peoples of Australia at least 12,000 years ago.
Bradshaw岩画
Bradshaw Rock Paintings
As for today's project, we will paint in the style of Bradshaw Rock Paintings on a clay slab. Painting on a clay slab will allow us to experience a similar process as our ancestors, who painted on rocks and walls of caves.
