5 Reasons Why You Should Attend an Art and Creative Networking Event
Every artist and designer knows that sometimes solitude is an important part of the creative process. Whether you work in fashion, architecture, film, or any other endeavor that involves making things, spending hours alone on an idea until it finally comes to life can be a very rewarding experience. But what about after you are done with that project? Can great art truly exist without an audience? If a performance artist falls in the forest and no one is around to see them, does it count as art?
As great as working by yourself to make a vision become a reality is, the truth is that “it takes a village” to make any project successful. From receiving helpful feedback to getting eyes on your work, networking is an essential part of the art and design industry. People in other fields know this, but for artistic people attending a networking event can feel like “selling out.” However, going to these types of events can be a very rewarding experience with many benefits Not convinced? Here are five reasons why you should attend an art and design industry networking event.
1
To Grow Your Professional Network
This one is obvious, but going to a networking event is a great place to meet new people. There is nothing wrong with being a little bear and hibernating in your cave, but from time to time it is important to go out and see the world. Meeting with other people, especially people working in creative jobs is a great way to connect with like-minded individuals, to expose yourself to new ideas, and to build relationships for future collaborations. Networking events act as catalysts that bring people together. Most people would agree that walking up to a stranger and introducing yourself is a bit weird, but at a networking event, this is the whole point!
2
To be Inspired
There is a possibility that you have taken the first step to leave your cave, but you do not happen to be a very social bear. Sometimes, attending a networking event can be more than just about meeting new people; in fact, it is often an opportunity to be motivated by others. Dried up creative juices, multiple failed projects, and a lack of direction can make it difficult to get out of a rut, but meeting new talented people may be a solution to this problem. Whether you are awe-struck (or filled with bitter jealousy), hearing about the great work others are doing can sometimes help you get back on your feet. It is important not to compare yourself to others, but that does not mean that you cannot be inspired by cool individuals to develop new projects.
3
To Build Your Brand
Do you know why Van Gogh did not become famous until after his death? It is because he did not network – probably. You may already be a cool individual, but what good does that do you when you cannot be told apart from everyone else? Show the world that you are “smarter than the average bear” by networking and building up your reputation. Whether you are a painter, a filmmaker, or a writer letting others know about your work is a great way to get people to notice what you do. When sharing your work there is no need to be annoying. Remember, successful networking involves having a conversation, not giving a presentation! Be polite, open, and attentive when listening. You can always talk about projects another day, but you cannot make a first impression twice – unless you happen to be a remarkably forgettable person, in which case you should work on your introduction.
4
To Grow Your Team
The challenges of being an artist or designer are far too much for one person to bear alone. What do the Ninja Turtles and The Beatles have in common? They are teams composed of great individuals, that are made stronger as a group. You may already be a John or a Paul, but sometimes a band needs a Ringo to even things out. Attending a networking event can be a great way to expand your team. Are you looking for an ambitious go-getter to help your dreams become a reality? What better place to find someone than an art networking event? People who attend these events are usually goal-oriented and are looking for a new challenge – and that is exactly who you have been looking for.
5
To Make New Friends
Many times, the amazing people you will meet a networking event will not be able to offer you a job or to help you sell your latest masterpiece, instead, what they can offer you is friendship. In the long run, being able to form a strong connection with other people in your industry can prove to be a lot more valuable. These will be the people that will tell you when a new position opens up, the ones who will write letters of recommendation for you, and the ones who will cheer you up when you fail and celebrate with you when you succeed. When approaching a person at a networking event, do not assume that they will instantly be your best friend, but also do not be cold and aloof. You never know who you may be talking to, the person in front of you could range from your future boss to your future partner. Regardless, treat everyone with respect and do not assume that a friendly tone is a flirty tone, this is after all still a professional event. However, whatever happens after the event is up to consenting adults.
