This piece is based on observations made at the time and feedback from others within China. There's nothing subjective, but rather objective, and more purely factual, as seen by a westerner living in China.

Kids and Exercise
Many people simply stayed in their flats from about the 23rd January until at least mid-March. The first time I had dinner in a restaurant with another person was the 19th of March. For the family next door only the guy went out for food while the wife and two daughters stayed home. The older girl has been attending a pre-university college with much more freedom, and has not taken well to being locked down, so I have heard arguments.
Many people had taken up skipping which reverberates through the building. I have heard other sorts of exercise which I do not recognise – a regular moaning sound – no not that. I walked but not quickly because of the discomfort of wearing the masks.
Now all is back to normal with many kids racing around, most masked but some not, with the adults standing around talking and exercising outdoors. I see a lot of happy people.
These people were advised that, if they wear masks and isolate the family, their kids and parents would be safe. They did, they were.
Back to the News
On the 13th in the Daily Briefing, they announced that anyone under quarantine could get a free nucleic acid test at home. I think by this time they had more testing capacity than they knew what to do with, and they dropped the “come to a fever clinic” in favour of “we’ll come to you”. They warned people not to panic if they saw an ambulance and hazmats. About this time I did see such an ambulance and the normal reaction here is for people to gather round and gawp, but this time they scattered. The people here have been very nervous of the virus after learning about what happened in Wuhan and this has helped the social distancing a lot.
Also there was the little song and dance about all the PPE they were sending, use of robots to deliver things and a warning that it would rain – it did.
However, in the SZDaily they started including some graphics which are quite interesting. I show the one from a couple of days later when they started putting discharged patients on. Is that curve flat enough?
The Daily Briefing for the 15th in SZDaily has more interesting pieces – for me anyway. The metro started using real-name identification, meaning that you could not use anonymous single ride tokens or stored value cards. My WeChat is real-name verified because it uses my bank account to pay for things and so is linked uniquely to me. So I used the relevant WeChat mini program to produce a QR code and scan my way in and out. Also in each carriage there are QR codes defining which one you are riding in.
These would be jolly useful if there were a bunch of infected people riding the metro, but there weren’t. So why did they do it? Because they can.
The briefing also said that it would be cold. It was.
Also that disinfecting the soles of your shoes and your car tyres was over-reactive. However, that did not stop them from running their ZoomLions. I do not have a picture of one in action, but that cannon at the back sways from side to side spitting out clouds of disinfectant and making the roads safe, for what? It also disinfects any cyclists who do not get out of the way quickly enough.
The news became quite repetitive after that and I will not detail it. In retrospect the 21st of February is significant because it was the date of the most recent case transmitted within Shenzhen. That was two weeks into the official lockdown, four weeks since the start of the informal lockdown, five weeks since testing became available and seven weeks since the first suspected case in Shenzhen was identified.
So after that date all cases were either imports from other countries and, later, a few asymptomatic cases coming from Hubei. There have 39 imported cases, 33 of them Chinese citizens and the majority returning from the UK and USA. One set of worries arose because people were flying into Hong Kong, using public transport to get to the Shenzhen Bay crossing, then immediately being identified and sent to PH3. The screening at HKIA was not effective and it was a relief when that routing was eliminated.
This graph shows detection of cases and the recovered people. There is the large spike of people at the end of January and the start of February mostly as people came back from Hubei. But because the informal lockdown was in place they did not transmit the disease to any extent. By the 10th of February, recoveries exceeded new cases. At the same time foreigners would have been leaving China and going back to their own countries, some taking a little packet of virus inside them.

很多人从1月23日开始就待在家里，一直到3月中旬。我第一次约一个人到餐厅吃饭是3月19日。我隔壁的那一家人，只有丈夫出来买菜，妻子和两个女儿都待在家里。大女儿上大学预科，大抵自由惯了，所以对封闭不是很遵从，我听到过一些争吵声。
很多人在家跳跃运动，我能听到楼道里的回响。我还听到过一些其他的运动声音，但我不知道是什么运动——一种呻吟的声音——哦不不是那个。我也会散散步，但速度不是很快，因为戴着口罩很不舒服。
现在一切都恢复正常了，户外开始有小孩子们到处跑，大部分都戴着口罩，也有一些没戴的，身边都有在闲聊或者运动的大人陪同。我看到很多人都很开心。
回到新闻
2月13日的最新通报发布，隔离人员可以在家免费做核酸检测。我想这时候应该有了更多检测能力，他们也知道该怎么处理了。他们还用“到发热门诊来”代替了“我们会来找你”，并告诫大家看到救护车和防护服不要恐慌。我确实有看到过，但凡有一辆救护车，人们都会在周围直愣愣地围观，但现在大家都分散了。在知道了武汉的情况后，大家都对病毒很紧张，这也有助于拉开社交距离。
他们还发布了关于个人防护的宣传、机器人送货等新闻，以及降雨提示等——确实也下雨了。
但是，《深圳日报》开始增加了图表，这非常有意思。这是几天后发布的，上面开始增加了出院病人的数据。这个折线够平吗？
2月15日，《深圳日报》最新通报里有了更多有趣的内容——反正对我来说很有趣。地铁开始实名验证，这意味着不能用匿名的单程票或储值卡了。我的微信是实名验证的，因为用了我的银行卡支付，所以是和我本人绑定的。所以我用相关的微信小程序生成二维码，扫码进出地铁。每个车厢里也有二维码，这样就能定位你所在的车厢。
如果有一帮感染者上了地铁，那么这样做是非常有用的，但是没有感染者呀，所以他们为什么这么做呢？因为他们能这样做。
通报里还说天气会转凉，确实也变冷了。
还有鞋底消毒、轮胎消毒这种过度的做法。还有他们的消毒环保车。我没有拍到消毒车运作的照片，我也没法拍，因为消毒车的两边都会喷洒消毒剂让道路更安全。为什么这么做？搞不好还会喷到那些没有来得及躲闪的骑自行车人身上。
从此之后，每天的新闻就开始变得重复，我就不一一赘述了。现在回过头看，2月21日是一个很重要的日子，因为从这天开始，最新确诊病例由本土病例转为输入型病例。此时距深圳开始正式封闭已经有2周了，距非正式封闭已有4周，据检测试剂投入使用5周，距深圳出现第一例疑似病例7周。
从那日之后， 所有新增确诊病例都是从其他国家输入，还有少数从湖北输入的无症状感染者。报道的39例输入型病例 中有33例是中国公民，绝大部分都是从英国和美国回来的。也有人担忧，因为这些人都是先飞到香港，然后乘坐公共交通到深圳湾入境，随即就被检测出来送入三院。香港机场的排查还是行之有效的，值得庆幸的是病例的行动路线已被清理。
我相信这些数字吗？
我的另一个数据来源是美国约翰·霍普金斯（Johns Hopkins）网站，1月31日有人给我看了这上面的数据（感谢Aaron）。我从2月6日开始记录中国的数据，分为湖北省和其他省市分别记录。我认为任何没有分开引证的数据都是无效的。
中国其他省市：
2月6日，7813例确诊病例、14例死亡病例；
2月20日，12545例确诊病例、89例死亡病例；
3月5日，12943例确诊病例、110例死亡病例；
3月16日，15910例确诊病例、126例死亡病例。其中深圳有462例确诊和3例死亡病例。
注意3月5日，其他国家的数据已经赶超中国其他省市的数据，总计15007例确诊病例和274例死亡病例。
这可是一个总人口数有美国4倍、英国20倍的国家的数据。中国的西部省市鲜少受疫情影响。和湖北接触较少的省份也仅有少数病例，例如福建、云南、广西等。病例最多的省份是像河南、湖南这些与湖北直接接壤的，或是湖北籍人士较多的省份，例如广东、浙江、上海。这就说得通了。
除湖北省外病例最多的是广东省，广东是一个湖北籍人士较多的大省。广东省内病例最多的是深圳市，所以我看的并不是中国疫情较轻的城市。深圳的确诊人数比例是全国平均水平的3倍。这也说得通。
除了前面我提到的用红点标注每个确诊病例的所在地以外，我的另一个对比点还在于深圳三院的床位。一名护士告诉我，他们一直都有很多空余床位，所有的确诊病例都收治在这家医院，病例数最高达到322例（2月初）。
我在这里也没有见过任何感染者，或者任何见过感染者的人。而在其他国家，我认识的人身边都有这样的人。
在一次深圳图书交换活动上，我将这篇文章初稿给到一个中国朋友看，他看后评论道：
“从我知道的情况看来，你的经历以及对中国政府应对疫情的思考，和绝大多数中国人的经历和感受一致。我们也曾经担忧和怀疑过政府的数字，但是随着事态发展，生活和工作慢慢恢复正常，我们能感觉到每天紧绷的神经和压力都在慢慢缓解。我们又重拾信心。在没有对比其他国家的政府之前，我都不知道中国政府是这么高效。当然也有很多值得改进的地方，比如社区管理的官僚作风等。但总体来说，我很感谢我们的政府为抗击疫情所作的一切工作。”（谢谢Shepherd）
这张图表显示了确诊病例和治愈病例。1月底、2月初的时候有一个大高峰，这时候的大多数确诊患者都是来自湖北省。但是由于当时深圳已经开始非正式封闭，这些病例都没有再传播扩散。2月10日，治愈病例开始超过新增病例。
同时，外国人也开始相继离开中国，其中就不乏有些人把病毒带回到了自己的国家。
