WHO can be artist, painter, writer, poet, editor, publisher, philosopher, photographer, designer, architect, scientist, filmmaker, musician, art collector, art dealer, antique dealer, founder of an art platform, a distinctive "qi pa", a grassroot off mainstreams, a daring storyteller, a soul catcher, or a street performer with a voice rumbling like the sea of storms.

So honored to announce THE WHO of August goes to the indefatigably persevering portrait artist Daryl Bates.

I am a machine, I will never be blessed with the ability to think for myself with true feeling. I am equal to a pair of old blue jeans. I am a tool used to create a mood or style, but I am only acting.

Foreword 前言

Daryl Bates is somehow fascinated by portraits and has created thousands of life drawings. Looking through his portraits and self-portraits, such as Self-Portraits in Toilet, in Wonder, as a Suffering Man, or as an Ugly Man, we can not only see the relentlessness in his pursuit of the development of portraiture but also the honest struggle of cultivating his technical ability. Being an artist of perfection and a man of imperfection, Daryl shows us the spirit of authenticity in the progress of making artworks - there is not always inspiration, the flows of creativity are not always smooth, the result of work has not always been great, and life sometimes can be totally draining, yet he just keeps painting and drawing year after year, with the same persistence and habit.

Selected reversely from 2020 to 1992, some of his yearly works are completed and some not; some seem more creative in his early works than the later ones; and some give the satisfying impression of perfectionism. Generally, his work has evolved from his undergraduate experimental and conceptual object making into representational, classical figurative narratives, and now into a hybrid of his art-life experiences.

---Self-Portraits, 2019-1995 | 自画像

Daryl Bates has developed his survival instinct and interest for travel and culture, with the transient nature of growing up in a military family. Being an outsider, He learned to adapt his character to various regional American cultures. This had a profound effect on his self-identity and confidence. Drawing was an escape from the challenges of adolescence, exercising his imagination. As he became an adult, mature ideas including fetish, desire, achievement, combined with a growing fascination of philosophy, mythology, fantasy, and cultural traditions, began to inform the creative work.

Daryl attended the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute for his BFA, studying painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture and performance art under mentors: Carlos Villa, Fred Martin, Franklin Williams, Dewey Crumpler, Cluadia Bernardini, Richard Berger, Jermey Morgan, and Guillermo Gomez-Pena. He received his MFA from Laguna College of Art and Design studying under mentors: Stephen Douglas, Randall Cabe, Thomas Stubbs and Sergio Sanchez. He has privately mentored with master painter Vincent Desiderio in Belgium and Italy. He was studio assistant to Environmental Sculptor Dan (Das Mann) Lowrey, collaborating on “The Last Stand” installation at Burning Man 2002. Daryl currently lives in Shanghai, where he has contributed to HuArts as an arts writer, hosts figure drawing workshops, teaches art, and maintains a painting studio practice.
