Foreword 前言

Of all THE WHO artists, Mike Clark is probably the most controversial. There is no major proof for his "arts". But it is very interesting to see an ordinary man creating an extraordinary life. Mike is a man who has read 5000+ books, listened 3000+ CDs, travelled 50+ countries, lived 10+ cities and married one time. What never ceases to amaze me is that, the words and the lyrics he has viewed or recited, are carved in his memory. He seems to remember everything. Whenever and whatever I asked, he would give the answer 'scientifically' or 'systematically', like a living computer or a living dictionary. And the things he told were based upon his knowledge, his experiences, his perspectives, his realistic or factual life stories, with his personal background. That gave me some insight into a window reflecting the unique difference between eastern and western culture. He appeared to be the epitome of a universal inclusiveness beyond time and place. His mind draws a map that never gets  himself lost. His past paints a picture that mirrors the modern world condensed in a museum. Last month I asked him to write one paragraph for each essential part of his artistic life, and he sent me 40000+ words with a joke: "It can't be that short. I have a long life."

Mike was born on December 6th, 1946. This article was meant to be a specially belated birthday gift for the eight years of his being my best friend, my private editor for my two English novels (Less Than Mystery, From Gully To Wall), and my great "helper" with his genius humor, and more importantly, his kindness. I always wonder whether he has a dream to be an artist between life and performance. What if he himself or his life itself is a living piece of art? Who knows?

- Mike Clark

In all of my writings, I am far more conscious of what is omitted, rather than the things included.

Mike Clark is a British performance artist, writer, editor and a transport planner. He grew up in a house full of books and never stopped being an avid reader. He studied maths at Bristol University, but would do anything he thinks is interesting. He called himself an introverted exhibitionist idiot, but fun with it. And he can't be embarrassed or worried about what anyone else thinks. What's more, he writes from his life and that needs no fictionalisation. His account of the early part of this year, "How China Deceived the World" is serialised on HeathersChamber. He is currently writing a brief autobiography. His job enabled him and his family to have lived in five continents. He now lives in Shenzhen.

01
Books 书 | Part 部分

‘Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are. Mason Cooley’  That is how it has been this year, so I am still sane.

—— Mike Clark

Mike started reading simple books at three years old and adult books when he reached nine. There was no television until he was twelve. The reading habit has never died. He visited libraries and took out ten books at a time during the school holidays. Early on, he had the patience to read Dickens and the Brontes, and got into Shakespeare comedy sketch shows. The 1960s was his science fiction period, not exclusively, but heavily, with Robert Sheckley and Roger Zelazny being favourites – his 22-year-old son has worked his way through those. After that, a lot of crime fiction, including just about everything from John le Carrey, Ian Rankin, Reginald Hill and Tony Hillerman. And then, there is the unclassifiable Christopher Brookmyre – purveyor of the “Tartan Noire” genre. He is now reading the Sea of Poppies trilogy by Amitav Ghosh, but he wishes the print would be made bigger. Maybe he will be forced away from paper to electronic devices, but he’ll keep reading.

‘One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain. ― Bob Marley’  Once you get hit by “No Woman, No Cry” or “I shot the Sheriff” you can never be the same again.

—— Mike Clark

Mike has never been able to play any instrument, but he has loved music all his life. Starting with 1940/50s pop songs, but finding classical music to be more satisfying. At school he listened more to jazz and blues, which had not been available in his house. Everything changed in 1963 when the Beatles and the Rolling Stones changed music for ever. For the next ten years in England rock music evolved, and he was always following it, listening and watching whenever he could. His favourite group was the Who (Pete Townshend’s Who, not Heather’s). Moving on to Pub Rock, Punk and then New Wave, and beyond. He still listens to all those types of music and has playlists for each decade (the 1960s playlist is over nine hours long). Lately he has played Count Basie with 1930s big band music, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald for vocal jazz, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters for Chicago Electric Blues, the Beatles, parts of his 60s and 70s playlists and Schubert’s Death and the Maiden string quartet. He has about one thousand CDs, now ripped to his phone and played through via Bluetooth to a top range speaker given by his kids. All hard music.

Mike knows the mathematics of transport planning. He gets asked things like “What will happen if this highway is built?” Then the art comes in to modify the maths, as maths and music go together. He estimates the usage, where the access traffic will come from, the economic, financial and environmental impacts, and report on the consequences. It doesn’t have to be transport infrastructure, it can be changes in land-use, maybe building a new town, or changes in fares, taxes or regulations, anything that affects the way people and freight move. With transport planning, his life tends to move around. Starting from London in 1969, he was considered good enough to be taken to Hong Kong in 1973. It was such an adventurous place with a wild flavour to everything, very different from today. Once you’ve been successful in one foreign position you get offered others. The next destination was Algiers for a national study, which again went well. There he met his wife, the landlady’s daughter, not that easy in a Muslim country. They eloped to England on Monday and married on Friday in 1977. After that was La Paz, Bolivia, an excitingly beautiful place to live in at 3,800m altitudeIn 1981, they moved back to Hong Kong and stayed there apart from a couple of years in Singapore, then a futile attempt to settle down with children in the USA in 1985. He retired to Worcester, England in 1999, which was boring for a traveller like him. In 2003, he started working in Shenzhen, nothing like today's city, with trips elsewhere. He won’t leave until he has to.

Mike did some stand-up comedy in bars during his stay in Hong Kong and was quite popular. All through that time, if he thought something was funny, he would do it. If only he had photos of the bar in La Paz. But this was long before easy picture taking. In 2008, a site Shenzhen Stuff gave him plenty of scope. He met very many appreciative audiences for his acts. The peak was definitely Meimei. An aunt of his children who ran “Gentlemen’s Clubs” in Shanghai, was always looking for sexy girls. This gave him many opportunities to talk dirty onsite. The first Meimei appearance was in 2009 and timed to coincide with a visit of his two daughters – he thinks it’s the duty of a father to embarrass his daughters, but it only worked with one of them. Meimei reappeared in October of that year at a lingerie party in 25th Floor True Color Reggae Bar, then twice more in 2010 at Kingway and La Casa. That's the end of "the old bat".
