THE WHO, a series of intercultural creators being featured in HeathersChamber, was inspired by A Vision of Me. No matter how negligible a character or a piece of work is, there's some beauty in the eye of the beholder. And the beauty is what it is, as you are being you. Whichever way you like to see, you get what you want to behold.
With rapid modernization, technologization, cultural globalization and the popularization of art, it naturally becomes a trend that something traditional is pushing to a cliff and the traditional creators feel a thread on edge. When Marcel Duchamp's 1917 Readymades 'Fountain' hit the world as an icon of the twentieth-century art, the majority of hard-working artists with long hours or even long years spent on their work, must have felt a punch in the face or a revolution that "how come art could be produced from already existing urinal like a breeze". Especially last December after Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan's duct-taped banana work went viral with a whopping sale price of $120,000 in Miami US and another artist David Datuna ate that real-life banana as 'performance art', the expression of art is oddly muddled. "What kind of art on earth can be satisfying to the living generations?"
Such satisfaction lays upon our awareness, our self-discovery and our acceptance, if "art forms a priceless living bridge between the everyday psychology of our minds and the universal spirit of humanity'". As Karl Marx noted over a century ago in the preface to Das Kapital: "The country that is more developed industrially only shows, to the less developed, the image of its own future." The unimaginably "advanced" art might blow someone's mind, but not shake the root of traditional art. It is to this remark that BEHOLD EXHIBITION will take place in a grey area where we can look forward, backward, upward, downward, outward, inward, homeward and beyond. Whatever direction we look, we stay firm at where we are, reflect on who we are, and keep doing what we are doing.

HeathersChamber is honored to collaborate with No.name Studio for our new group exhibition BEHOLD, featuring works by THE WHO artists of 2020: No.name1, No.name2, No.name3, No.name4, No.name5, No.name6, No.name7, No.name8, No.name9, No.name10, No.name11, No.name12, No.name13, No.name14, No.name15, No.name16, and plus one mysterious No.name17. The exhibition will open on December 27th, 2020.
BEHOLD is an exhibition to explore humans and humanity, to stimulate real dialogue about the larger questions of life, to challenge the boundaries of who we are, what we do and where we are going. The philosophy of confronting these doubts has provided benefits to our societies for centuries. This time, let's behold something through these angles: traditional Chinese culture, modern industralization, social disparity between the individual and the community, the impact and process of human thinking, interpersonal relationships, and our relationship to the world, our cultural consciousness, our simplicity, our inner conflicts, our emotions, our subconscious, our authenticity, our discovery, and self.
Heather has been looking for a proper space for this exhibition since March, and this is one of the many good reasons why THE WHO chose No.name Studio: “In Chinese contemporary art history, No Name Group was known as the first underground art group during the Cultural Revolution, which can be traced back to 1959 when Zhao Wenliang and Yang Yushu met each other at the Xihua Fine Arts Institute. It was emerged in 1979 and also had one of the longest lifespans of any collective, persisting for nearly half a centrury.”
