Goal Orietned:
Ownership:
Follow Up:
Awesomeness:
Repeatability:

Though the summer is often seen as a time to relax and recharge, many Daystar students use the summer break to learn new skills, try new activities, and contribute to their communities in a myriad of ways. As we embark on a new school year together, we want to share the stories of the three Daystar students who participated in our inaugural Daystar Internship Program.
Experiential learning is one of the pillars of the Daystar curriculum, as such building a rich internship program for our high school students is integral to our educational mission. As high school students prepare for university and their careers beyond, an experience of life in the world of work affords them a glimpse of what is to come, allows them to apply their skills in a real world setting and further equips them with the courage to change and inspire.
We hope that the stories of these three students will inspire you to learn more how a Daystar Academy education uniquely prepares students for the next stage of their life journey.
Filmed right before the summer of 2021, this video features rising 11th graders Halley Guo, David Liu, and Nick Chen. Join them as they prepare for their internship experience along with Counselor Melissa Warehall, and program coordinators Michael Gonzalez and Darcy Au-Yeung.
Real World Experiences by Design
The Daystar Intership Program was designed using the principles of GO-FAR a design thinking technique unique to Ivy Education.
Goal Orietned:
Internship placements were tailor-made for each student, considering their passions, interests, and skill level. Students were required to meet certain readiness criteria and prepare themselves by setting their own learning goals and deciding how they would share what they learned with the wider community.
Ownership:
Daystar Academy has ensured the continued success of this program by forming a committee consisting of our High School Principal, Counselor and program coordinators who have been tasked with ensuring that all high school students will have the opportunity to participate in this valuable program.
Follow Up:
The internship does not end when the student leaves their workplace. Each student is responsible to prepare and present a capstone project in the form of a talk, multimedia presentation or short film. These will be archived and available for viewing on our community portal, much like our “Projects for Change”.
Awesomeness
Not content to simply provide resume filler, our internship process ensures that each student will be involved in meaningful work. The team spent months vetting potential employers, getting mentors in place and ensured that the job description fit the goals of the internship.
Repeatability:
The internship program is a key feature of the Daystar educational experience. Even now the team is hard at work developing new contacts. We have already secured commitments from a prominent design firm, a software developer, and an Eco-Lodge in mountains of Yunnan.
Follow Nick, Halley and David on their Internship Journeys
Each week in September we will release a new episode that follows each of our interns. Join Nick as he is put through the paces of the McDonalds management program, Halley as she works with a group of curators at the BR Gallery in Beijing and David who spent his internship working at the architecture firm Robart Spaces. Stay tuned all month to learn more about these remarkable students.
