Please scroll down for the English version

Nick

Nick

Internship program is one of the important parts of our Social Innovation Program. It epitomizes the implication of “Connecting”, one of the keywords of Social Innovation Program. As high school students prepare for university and their careers beyond, an internship experience that immerses students in the real world help them connect with the world, allows them to apply their skills in a real world setting and further equips them with the courage to change and inspire.

Starting from this week, we will release video documentaries recording three Daystar students who participated in the first summer internship program.

Please stay tuned!

In the video, Nick looks quite calm, and also enjoys the joy of being recognized. Nick told us that actually, what he gained from this internship experience was more than just being recognized: you need to be careful and attentive, to be organized despite the complexity of a task, and to be able to control his emotions in a not very pleasant situation -- all of these qualities and skills will bring him closer to his dream of becoming an educator!

#01 The “Carefulness” That Sounds Easy

Young people are always quicker in mind than in action. This was the case with Nick when he just entered the internship. Upon seeing new orders showing on the screen, he immediately started to make the product for fear that customers might get frustrated...

One time, as he finished filling up a cup confidently, he heard his mentor reminding: Did you take a large cup or a medium cup? Nick checked his order, and sure enough, he made a mistake with the size of the cup.

“Large cup or small cup, with or without milk, cold or hot... Customers can have so many demands, and if you do not pay attention, you will make errors. We keep saying we should be careful and it doesn’t sound like a difficult thing, but when you are at work, it’s quite challenging to be particularly careful with everything you do,” said Nick, as part of his reflections.

#02 To Take Charge All by Himself

It’s not so easy a job for Nick to make coffee as those baristas at coffee shops.

When the order flashes on the screen, you need to start working immediately, or another order will pop up. It’s like a serial killer call!

At the beginning, Nick often found himself in frantic rush, but luckily, his mentor gave him instructions with patience and Nick tried his best to learn and keep up with the pace. Gradually, the mentor intentionally left Nick to himself, like going out to replenish stock or making an inspection tour of the restaurant, or asking Nick to operate the Cafe station all by himself. Unconsciously, Nick began to take charge independently.

“One day, my mentor asked me, do you know how many cups you made today? I made a count and found that I made 100 cups within 4 hours! I also replenished the stock and cleared up the counter!” After continuous hard work and dedication, Nick suddenly felt the pleasure of being able to take charge all by himself.

#03 Take it Easy!

Nicked also had to deal with customers, and of course, with customers having different personalities, not all of the experiences were pleasant.

One day, a customer entered the restaurant, and Nick came up to ask what he needed. But unexpectedly, the customer, in a bad mood, gave Nick a scolding, actually, quite a good scolding.

At first, Nick was shocked, as he had never met such a situation on campus. He felt quite aggrieved and didn’t know what he had done wrong. But he tried to control his emotions, “what I can do is to avoid exacerbating the conflict with my emotions.” It's not easy for a hot-blooded 17-year-old to swallow the blame for nothing.

Carefulness, resistance to pressure and control of emotions are important qualities for everyone to survive in society. For Nick, it is a prerequisite for him to realize his future career dream - to be an educator.

“Although the internship was not directly related to my career interests, it was very helpful to practice some important skills and qualities. The school has plans for an education-related internship for me next summer.” Nick said.

Regardless of goals like career pursuit and interest inspiration, the significance of doing internship in society is to enable students to truly experience how it is like being a social member and reflect on the concepts and knowledge taught in daily life in the “real scene”.

In the end, let’s feel Nick’s progress in making latte art through some pictures, and congratulations on his growth again!
