“力求改变项目”社区工作坊：

把学习和社区福祉联结起来

Project for Change Community Workshops:

Connecting Learning to Service and Wellbeing

7年级和8年级学生正在进行力求改变项目的过程中。很幸运，他们能够与社区机构的组织者和专家互动，增长知识的同时，也更好地确定自己的项目目标。

本周三，学生们在4个非政府组织领导者组织的工作坊中，选择适合自己项目的参加：松乔领导的自然改变者工作坊、领养小铺创始人Chris Barton组织的动物救助与权益工作坊、自然疗法医生Melissa Rodriguez领导的心理健康工作坊，以及关注贫穷与健康需求、由和睦家中国医疗基金会执行总监组织的工作坊。

来自这些机构领导者分享开始启发学生思考如何通过自己的项目，回应社区的真实需求。当社区组织和专家能够与充满动力和天赋的学生群体互动时，创新的火花就被释放出来了！

同日，北皋校区5年级的学生们也获得了与其中2家机构互动的机会。

学生们倾听了和睦家中国医疗基金会领导者的演讲，这让他们更好地理解了非政府组织能够怎样更有效地服务于所在的社区——他们把思考当地社区的需求和寻找资源满足这样的需求联系起来。基金会为社区里不便获得大医院或医疗中心服务的人们提供基于手机的健康监测和紧急医疗。整个过程中，孩子们不但了解了基金会，也亲见爱心医疗车，并就怎样服务自己所在的社区提出了很多问题。

同一天，学生们也聆听了领养小铺创始人的演讲。创始人分享了自己救助流浪狗和为它们寻找领养家庭的热忱。他也介绍了在社区内进行宠物关爱和健康教育的想法，以及学生怎样提供志愿服务。孩子们明白了，世界上不只有人类需要爱、照顾和服务。

孩子们收获了一场非常积极的学习体验。我们希望，他们能借此获得激励和启发，以便在来年春天更好地准备毕业展览，更好地服务自己的社区。

Grade 7 and 8 students are in the midst of their Projects for Change this semester and had the privilege of connecting with community organizations and experts in the field to deepen their knowledge and better define their Project goals. 

On Wednesday students got to choose between four workshops based on their project topic: Changemakers for Nature with Songqiao Yao, Animal Rescue and Rights with Little Adoption Shop founder Chris Barton, Mental Health and Wellbeing with naturopathic doctor Melissa Rodriguez, and poverty and health needs with the Executive Director of the United Foundation for China’s Health. 

There were many questions for the speakers and ideas began percolating on how our students can help address genuine community needs through their Projects. It was a good reminder that when community organizations and experts are linked to a motivated and talented student body, sparks of innovation are released!

On the same day, Daystar Beigao's Grade Five students also had the opportunity to connect with and learn from 2 of the organizations. 

While listening to leaders from the United Foundation for China's Health, the students were able to get a better understanding of how an NGO can serve its community. They connected to the idea of considering the needs of the local community and then finding resources to support that need. UFCH works to provide mobile health care and urgent care through surgeries to communities who do not have easy access to larger hospitals or medical centers.  The students were able to not only learn about the organization, but also to see the Medical Bus and ask questions to gain deeper insights into how they might serve their communities.  

In addition, the students had a presentation from the Little Adoption Shop.  The founder of this organization shared his passion for rescuing dogs, providing shelter and care, and helping them find life long homes.  He discussed the idea of community education related to pet care and pet health, and how students can help be advocates. The students gained perspective on the fact that humans are not the only living things which need love, care and service. 

Overall it was a very positive learning experience which will hopefully inspire the Grade Five students as they prepare to serve their community through their exhibition in the spring.
