First Inno-Imagine Grants Awarded

Please scroll down for the English version

Last weekend, Vivian Gao, Visual Arts Teacher at Daystar Sanlitun Campus, shared a Wechat Moment post: “If you come to Sanlitun, please buy an Olympics postcard painted by our Daystar students in Chun Feng Xi Xi bookstore as a token of your kind heart.”

She also posted some pictures and a short video clip:

This wonderful initiative to create postcards in honor of the Beijing 2022 Olympics, and selling them at local businesses to raise money for charity, was inspired by Daystar’s Inno-Imagine Grants Program. Two Inno-Imagine Grant proposals have been accepted to date, and we hope to receive many more.

Olympic Postcards

This creative idea to develop Olympic Postcards was jointly proposed by Chinese teacher Su Xia, English teacher James Thomason, and the Sanlitun G2 students.

It started in early January not only to promote the upcoming 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, but to raise money to help Little Adoption Shop to take care of stray animals.

Teachers guided students to design Olympic-themed postcards and through their Inno-Imagine grant all the professional printing and distribution costs were covered.  They made connections to sell the postcards with two bookstores in Sanlitun, including Chun Feng Xi Xi, PageOne and Yue Du Qi Yuan, as well as Patagonia clothing store and the local farmers’ market.

Teacher Su Xia said: "At the beginning, when we discussed this project with the students, they were very enthusiastic and interested, because many children care deeply about stray animals and want to take initiative to help. The students who participated in the activity fully reflected the Daystar core values of caring and unity.”

Students attended the project

Ms. Su also shared that many 2nd grade students took their parents and friends to the Chun Feng Xi Xi Bookstore to enjoy these postcards and encouraged others to buy them. Many people were touched and left messages in the interactive area of the bookstore.

Community relaxing spaces

The other Inno-Imagine Grants awarded to date is supporting middle school students in creating a “Community relaxing space” at the Daystar Beigao Campus.

It was proposed by four G7 students. They found, after survey, that students wanted more spaces on campus for chilling out and relaxing. Their research also showed that students’ academic performance is positively related to the comfort level of their learning environment based on a UCAS.

So, these G7 students proposed to create a small space for everyone to relax and enjoy as part of their Project for Change. They came up with a detailed schedule, bought decorative items with the Inno-Imagine Grant, and basically finished the makeover by the end of the semester:

Cushions, carpets, small tables, frames, and comfortable round-backed armchairs… In the solemn yet lively teaching building, they managed to create a small space for a cozy and relaxing life with clear guidelines for students on how to use the space.

Respect each good idea

For a good idea to become reality, what we need sometimes is just a little bit help—some funding, some kind tips, or some honest encouragement and recognition from others.

And that is what our Inno-Imagine Grants Program under Daystar’s Social Innovation Program is providing. We are offering financial and strategic help and encouragement for innovative initiatives, no matter how small, that can make a positive difference to the campus or neighboring community.

The Program gives proposals financial support, assesses whether the proposals are feasible, and offers advice to improve the impact. For example, when the students proposed the “Community relaxing spaces,” it was near the end of the semester. The clock was ticking, so we helped the students amend their timeline to be more efficient and get the space set up before the end of the semester!

We hope this program inspires creative and impactful ideas and encourage students, staff and parents to put these forward in the Inno-Imagine Grant application form.” shared Elizabeth Walker Sobhani, Director of Social Innovation.

Proposals will be assessed based on:

1. Understanding of the problem/challenge;

2. Quality and feasibility of implementation plan;

3. Impact or benefit to the community (how many people will be engaged, is it one off or sustainable)

In addition, the proposal needs to be related to the one of UN SDGs: Community relaxing spaces is related to Goal 4—Quality Education; Olympic Postcard is related to Goal 15—Life on Land.

Applicants also need to make an implementation schedule, and evaluate the potential risks and relevant solutions.

“We are excited by these first two grants that were awarded. The Olympic Postcards shows how the enthusiasm of a couple teachers can multiply to the broader community with our bookstore partners actively selling these student postcards to their customers in Sanlitun. This is the power of social innovation and collaboration!” said Sobhani.

We hope to see more students submitting their brilliant ideas for an Inno-Imagine Grant!
