From four to one thousand…
Can you imagine that today’s Daystar, with over 1,000 students, only had four students when it was first founded?
20 years ago, there were not many bilingual or bicultural schools in Beijing. Mr. Cai Jinyong, then Executive Vice-President and CEO of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank, founded Daystar with his wife Dawn Vermilya and some passionate parents according to their vision for global citizenship education.
After years of hard work, what began as a small, beautiful school has grown into the present Daystar schools, offering K-12 IB education and cultivating bilingual and bicultural talents with outstanding qualities (click for more).
Since its founding, Daystar has defined itself as a social innovation undertaking destined to make a difference.
Daystar has social innovation in its DNA and spares no effort in promoting its founding vision—the Social Innovation Program. This past Monday, Executive Board Member Mr. Jack Hsu invited co-founder Mr. Cai Jinyong to return to the school and deliver a speech to the high school students. We hope that their interaction with Mr. Cai inspires them to pursue excellence, develop a social innovation spirit, and make the world a better place.
In his speech titled “The unique opportunity for youth to help solve the social challenges facing the world,” Mr. Cai shared about his experience in participating in the formulation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as his many years of experience working for the World Bank.
He encouraged students to hold fast to a global vision as they traverse life’s roads and to view China’s development positively. “China has made great contributions in lifting up half of the world’s poor population out of poverty. China has exceeded this goal, helping up to 85 percent of the world’s poor shake off poverty. These achievements have been possible due to China’s stable society and sound governing policies…”
During the Q&A session, Mr. Cai praised the students for raising excellent questions. He also encouraged everyone to keep an optimistic and determined mindset during this time of uncertainty and emphasized the importance of thinking clearly, independently and critically.
Jack, Grade 11: Over the past few years, international organizations like the World Bank have provided significant assistance to developing countries, but we haven’t seen clear results from these efforts. Why is that?
Mr. Cai: Very good question. It’s true that the World Bank and other international organizations have provided aid to developing countries in the forms of funds, resources, and solutions to problems. However, some of the assistance was too theoretical or not practical. The most successful cases of assistance came from China. They adopted a step-by-step approach, learned from others’ experience, and made the most of their assistance resources. I hope when you find a job in the future, say working in an international organization, you will pay attention to the local problems and think critically.
Harry, Grade 9: The current global economy is not very promising, and we face difficulties like COVID-19 and regional wars. How should we make our future study and work plans?
Mr. Cai: The world today has a lot of uncertainties, but I believe the future is still promising. For example, we have enough food, natural gas, and other staple commodities and resources. But we are facing issues of relative governance. So, I advise you look at these global problems from all sides and study basic social sciences like economics and politics. Because, to become a global citizen, you need a strong and comprehensive critical thinking ability.
Halley, Grade 11: The Bretton Woods system failed, and the euro area was not very successful. I want to know if there will be a currency in the future, such as the euro or the RMB, that can be used globally like the dollar, and has a significant impact on the world economic pattern. What kind of impact will it have?
Mr. Cai: This is a good question. China enjoys a huge market, so when China’s GDP surpasses that of the United States, the RMB may become an alternative for the global monetary system. But of course, China needs to improve its capital market first. We still have a long way to go.
Starting this academic year, Daystar students have begun to study courses on social innovation, participate in social innovation events, and study topics related to social and economic development. Mr. Cai’s answers and suggestions have provided them with a valuable experience as they continue to learn about social innovation.
This lecture was the first of Ivy Education Group’s “Inno-Impact Distinguished Speaker” series. Outstanding individuals are invited to speak on campus to serve as positive examples and encourage students to take action and make a difference.
Mr. Cai’s speech inspired us and helped us understand that global problems need to be looked at from multiple angles. Daystar’s Social Innovation Program cultivates social innovators who can, in the future, help solve these difficult problems of humankind and make the world a better place.
--Mr. Jack Hsu, Executive Board Member
After the lecture, two Daystar students conducted an interview with Mr. Cai Jinyong on topics including the founding of Daystar and cultivating talents for a new era.
Mr. Cai said that in order to perform well and succeed in today's increasingly complex world, students need to be both specialized and well-rounded. Such students are also candidates who meet the selection requirements of the Dr. Paul S. C. Hsu Social Innovation Award.
