Secondary school teachers Yuki Zhang and Peggy Pang

What are the teachers reading?

Oh, they are reading Chinese picture books made by Daystar elementary school students.

“I would have never thought that Goodbye Tiger could have such a unique plot. It's not just a normal picture book. The book The Adventures of Little Beetle was made through paper cutting and rubbing,” said Ms. Peggy Pang.

No wonder the teachers couldn’t put the books down.

It’s a lovely scene from early April at the Social Innovation Marketplace and Phoenix Forum—a monthly event at Daystar Secondary School.

On that day, student representatives from Daystar Beigao and Sanlitun elementary schools were also present to attend the international original Chinese picture book contest.

They showed their creations to teachers and the older students. They also read their works aloud at the Phoenix Forum and amazed the whole audience.

The theme of this year’s picture book contest is “One Earth.” It’s such a great opportunity for Daystar students to fully utilize their talents!

Because caring about the world and trying to make a difference are included in the Daystar values of Caring and Service, they are part of daily school life at Daystar. The theme “One Earth” is like a walk in the park for our talented and creative students.

Sanlitun and Beigao students submitted over 100 works of art. Their picture books can prove that Daystar students are full of creativity and other precious qualities. They are young, yet they care about the world around them. They are worried about the environment, curious about other cultures, and they think the restriction of human activities due to the pandemic can help nature recover.

For it is only by going beyond trivial daily tasks that can they cast their vision to the future,

avoid interference in critical stages of life,

stay true to their life path,

and explore further and longer on the road of life.

Growth

The teachers were amazed and touched by the passion and dedication of the students, so they also spent a lot of time and energy helping them to learn.

Lucy Lu, a librarian at Daystar Beigao elementary school, along with other librarians and Chinese teachers, guided students to create picture books both during and after class.

“I’m so glad to see students grow through this wonderful project. For example, a student misunderstood the topic when writing his first draft. But he was so earnest and serious that every time I gave him some revision advice, he would carefully rewrite the draft. In the end, he perfectly integrated the topic and even expanded his picture book to fill about around 20 pages.” said Lucy.

We decided to hold this event to encourage students to promote and share their works with others, learn to reflect on themselves and communicate with each other. Xia Su, a Chinese teacher at Sanlitun, led students in practicing and rehearsing again and again to make sure everyone would deliver their best performance at the event.

Extention

So, with passion and devotion from both students and teachers, the picture book project extended beyond being a mere contest to being an operation.

Literacy Committee at Sanlitun campus organized Sanlitun senior students took their works to junior grades and Ivy Academy Sanlitun Campus and read for the kindergarten students:

In late March, Ms. Xia Su helped students initiated the “lost book” event by leaving picture books in 40 shops of TaiKoo Li, in Page One bookstore of Sanlitun, in Spring Breeze Bookstore and in bookstores in Tongzhou District, letting them circulate among local readers.

Students "lost books" in their nearby communities

Education is unlimited and we manage to promote our events beyond the campus to the nearby communities, bookstores in Tongzhou District, and the communities students live in. Taikoo Li Sanlitun and the Page One bookstore will help promote our “lost book” event. This Friday, Patagonia, a clothing shop that advocates responsible consumption, will host a live stream for us.

—Hannah Wu, Elementary Assistant Principal at Daystar Sanlitun Campus

Beigao students will also read their picture books on Earth Day for kindergarten students at Quanfa Campus, as well as are selling their books to raise fund for  Daystar’s partner charity organizations.

Recognition

Now, you must be wondering what exactly do these picture books, filled with stories and reflecting the dedication of the children, look like? Like you, we at Daystar are also looking forward to appreciating the students' works of art!

To ensure that everyone’s efforts are seen and recognized, teachers worked hard to put every piece on display. Now, all the student works submitted by both campuses are being scanned and printed for display, creating a wonderful and cherished memory for students.

Ms. Hannah even created a digital version of some selected picture books and displayed them online.

“I’m willing to support our students! We hope more picure books will be read widely. ” said Assistant Principal Wu.

Every picture book is so wonderful and interesting! The efforts of the students are worth respect and celebration!
