“Week for Change” Returns

Please scroll down for the English version

In the secondary school visual arts classroom, there are some art pieces woven from metal wire:

They were created by Zhu Chenhao, a student who underwent a heart transplant surgery in 2019. During the “Week for Change,” that year the Daystar Secondary students raised funds to support his rehabilitation and surgery costs. He created these  recent art works as his thank-you gifts for us.

During the Lunar New Year, Chenhao’s mother sent the works to Daystar with the message, “The Daystar kids helped us so much. We will never forget these lovely and wonderful kids!”

Helping this child is just one of the many activities supported by Daystar, built upon our core values of service and caring. Students learn to care, connect and take positive action through our Social Innovation Program.

That’s why during the week of May 16, despite the difficulties that COVID-19 has imposed on us, we restarted Daystar’s important tradition of a “Week for Change”!

An Unusual Return

Starting May 16, the “Week for Change” was held online for the Daystar Sanlitun and Beigao elementary and secondary school campuses.

Every day, students participated in a variety of activities to connect, take action and share about the organization and cause their division was supporting.

From Monday to Friday, various activities took place to help students connect with the organization and social issue, reflect on the lives of those they are supporting, coming up with solutions to take action, and even make a contribution. In this way, students put the Daystar core values of Care and Service into practice. They also honed their social innovation skills—a perfect demonstration of the Daystar’s Social Innovation Program Framework.

Social Innovation Program Framework

Bravo, teenagers!

Secondary school students chose to support Power Baseball Angels—a charity organizations that provides education and baseball training and accommodation for impoverished ethnic minority teenagers in China. Baseball is one of Daystar’s special programs, so the Daystar secondary school students felt very connected to the kids at Angels, and some had played them before!

Teachers organized students to connect with these strong children, listen to their stories, and watch a clip from their documentary “Tough Out”.

The experience of the Power Angels deeply moved the Daystar students. Under the guidance of teachers, they cultivated empathic listening and social storytelling skills and designed poster, blogs, PPTs to and share the story with friends and fund-raise.

"I grew up in the city and haven't experienced their life, but I have the same hobby with them and like sports... I grew up playing football. I have experienced many games, big and small, sometimes winning and sometimes losing. I never lose heart or proud of winning the game. I know their feelings after frustration and the excitement when they win the game best. It's us who never give up Our shared character is also our most precious asset. " Kris Li, a sixth grader, wrote in the PPT.

Yao Songqiao served as the consultant for the Social Innovation Program. She was delighted to observe these natural links: "children have found some common ground between themselves and the Power Angels, such as emotional links, such as loving sports, participating in competitions and perseverance!"

On Thursday, students from grades 6 to 9 showcased their Projects for Change they had been working on this semester through an on-line exhibition. Teachers, students and parents came to the live studio to visit the projects they were interested in and listen to the children explain their research findings and action taken.

These projects either focused on sustainable economy and nature conservation, well being and social inclusion. It was great to see the research they had done and the creative websites, videos, and action they had taken to support specific social and environmental issues.

Great Passion of the Little Ones

Elementary school students are extremely passionate and caring and making a difference and were fully devoted to the Week for Change.

Beigao Elementary School students chose to support Blue Sky Healing Home. The teachers led students to imagine what life is like for the orphaned and disabled children at Blue Sky Healing. Afterwards, the students wrote their opinions and thoughts in a form and uploaded it to Seesaw.

 Haiyue Li, Grade 3 Student

When it comes to taking action, students made their own contributions both at home and at Daystar. For example, some students donated their best artworks for auction, with all the raised funds being used to buy milk powder for kids at Blue Sky Healing Home. Others, did service in their community and chores at home. Some focused on fundraising and sharing the message of Blue Sky in their communities.

Sanlitun Elementary School students supported the Global Environmental Insitute (GEI) and had a talk from their Program Manager, BingYu to understand the opportunity we have to take care of the beautiful nature and environment in China. The children broadened their horizons, learned about the organization, and explored plans to eliminate food waste related to sustainable development and hot food issues. They made a thank-you card for the Institute, thanked them for their contribution to protecting the earth, and wrote a commitment card to make a promise for their "green" life.

All of these activities demonstrate the “Innovating” and “Connecting” aspects of our Social Innovation Program. The activities also helped students practice their social skills, inspired their awareness and passion for making a difference in the communities they live in, and built up their confidence.

Celebration!

From the 16th to the 20th, this extraordinary online "Week of Change" came to an end and culminated in a live online celebration – the children from Daystar gathered in front of their screens to listen to each other share their feelings and what they had learned from the past week. They also renewed the call for community members to raise more money for the three charities.

Looking back on the past week, sixth grader Merrick said: we learned about great children and supported them to practice social stoytelling and I think in the future, we can continue to keep in touch with these students, visit them, raise money for them and support their training! "

Teacher Ryan sweet, who has participated in the Week for Change many times, said: "this is a very important week. It inspires us to understand those who need help, take action and bring positive change."

Big Visions

This is a challenging time. Some may wonder why we at Daystar spend so much time cultivating care and service in our students, even though these qualities are not directly linked to their academic performance?

We do it to inspire their passion to make a difference in the world around them. Giving them these excellent qualities and the Daystar core values, is exactly our mission.

We also do it to cultivate students into social innovators with kind hearts, to equip them with emotional intelligence, ingenuity, design thinking skills, to make them resourceful in a changing world, and to help them realize their value in life.

“The world is rapidly changing and the skills and capacities that students need to flourish are not just academics. It is two-fold: continually developing students to their fullest potential, while also applying these skills to the betterment of the world every day. By caring and taking action to be of service in daily life, study or work, it fuels the further development of our hearts and minds. This is why it is so important to have programs like the Week for Change that inspire us to help others and for teachers and parents to be involved as role models too!  It’s also in line with the Making Caring Common project of Harvard Graduate School of Education.” Said Elizabeth Walker Sobhani, Director of Social Innovation Program.

We are thrilled that despite being held online, the Daystar community raised 39,000RMB during the Week for Change to support Blue Sky Healing Home, the Global Environmental Institute and Power Baseball Angels. We truly appreciate everyone’s generosity and participation in our Week for Change 2022!
