Please scroll down for the English version

With the end of this year’s application season, are there any new trends in international university admissions?

What will be the impact of the 2022 AP Exam adjustment in China?

What should students in grades 1-8 and 9-10 pay special attention to?

Listen to our Star Parents Academy’s keynote lecture by Ms. Melissa Warehall, Daystar’s Head of College Counseling and former Assistant Director of Admissions at the University of Chicago.

1

What Can We Learn from This Year’s Data?

This year, the competition for applicants to the top US and UK universities remains fierce.

Generally speaking, schools with an acceptance rate lower than 20% are called top universities. As we can see from the table below, the acceptance rate of top universities such as Ivy League schools has further decreased this year compared to last year.

It is important to note that the data refers to the overall acceptance rates for both domestic and international students. This low rate is due to an increase in qualified applicants submitting applications to these top schools.

American universities still require high levels of English proficiency for international students

Currently, although most American universities do not require domestic students to provide SAT or ACT scores, they still require international students to provide standardized test scores to prove that their English is sufficient to complete their college studies. So as we can see from the picture below, even universities with acceptance rates above 50% still require high scores on standardized tests of English as a second language, such as TOEFL, IELTS and the Duolingo English test. At some universities, the applicant’s intended major determines the minimum score needed to be competitive for admission.

Take the University of Illinois as an example. Here are the mid-50%, or median, TOEFL scores for applicants admitted to each college, as shown on the university's website.

At Daystar, we prepare students for the three widely accepted English proficiency exams for international university admission: TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo English Test.

The best preparation for doing well on an English proficiency test is to study diligently in Daystar’s bilingual curriculum. We recommend focusing on acquiring good study habits and doing well in MYP and PYP classes, instead of spending a lot of time before grade 11 preparing for standardized tests. Free time on weekends and after school should be spent in activities the student enjoys, like sports, music, art or robotics.

It is one thing to have a story, it is another to tell it right.

Colleges admit people, not just grades. The chart below shows sample cases of Chinese students admitted to American universities this year.

It's obvious that being successfully admitted to a top university requires excellent academic performance and language proficiency, as well as being able to tell a good “who you are” story.

At Daystar, we provide a variety of projects, clubs, and activities to give our students the opportunity to shine and stand out from other candidates. We also provide a robust college counseling curriculum in Grades 10, 11 and 12 that requires students to practice skills they need to for college applications, like self-reflection and values exploration.

What should be the focus when applying to UK universities?

In the US, only a few universities require the student to declare their major when they apply for admission, and changing one’s major is common. However, in the UK, universities will take the applicant's professional intentions as an important factor for admission and once a student begins studies in a course, it generally is not possible to switch to another subject.

In terms of the university admission rate, the UK is higher than the US because of a lower number of applicants. Still, for popular majors at top UK universities, the admission rate is also low.

Some people might ask if they should first apply for a less popular major then transfer to a popular one after admission. The answer is “no.” This is not an option in the UK. When you apply to a US university, you can leave your major undecided and choose it later, or you can change a major easily. But this is not the case in the UK.

2

What is the Impact of the adjustment

of the 2022 AP Exam in China?

First of all, Daystar Academy is an IB authorized school and does not use AP courses, so we are not affected.

Secondly, AP scores are not required for consideration for university admissions in the United States and Canada, but are used to determine which classes a student is placed in after enrollment.

Students who apply to UK universities generally receive conditional offers, which might require students to provide five AP scores of 5, or a score of 6 or 7 in their IB Higher Level courses. Therefore, only those who have received conditional offers and are required to provide AP scores are affected by the cancellation.

How should Parents Prepare Kids

for IBDP Studies?

For parents of students in grades 1-8, you should provide your child with activities and programs in art, sports, music, and other opportunities that give them the chance to explore the world and to discover their various interests.

When it comes to their studies, parents need to help them cultivate good habits and set standards so that they can be competent students. Given the online learning situation, we recommend that students study in a place like the living room or dining room instead of their bedroom. Parents need to remind their children to do their homework and check its quality and completion. They should also communicate with teachers about their children’s performance and progress.

For students in grades 9-10, parents should remind them to really focus on their grades  because starting from grade 9, grades will be included with the college application transcript and can impact the results.

Highly successful students in grades 11-12 tend to have very good study habits and take responsibility for their academic performance.

Star Parents Academy is an important platform for the Daystar family-school community that offers regular online/offline seminars to keep parents informed on school teaching and provide guidance for higher education, innovative education, and in-depth home education.

After an event, we will publish a text version of the key points on our WeChat. Stay tuned to our WeChat to see more important content like today’s lecture.
