/////////

Pursuing excellence is a critical part of Daystar’s core values. Daystar students have never stopped being stronger and better.

Last summer, Daystar students continued to explore various fields. Let’s applaud their efforts so that their hard work and dedication can be seen.

The “Inno-vision” Film Challenge concluded successfully

The awards ceremony for the “Inno-vision” Film Challenge was held in Beijing on August 11, bringing an end to this contest, which was initiated by three Daystar high school students and lasted for over four months.

Centering on the themes of “sustainable future for all” and “well-being”, the film challenge established an avenue for youth to tell their stories via video.

Students from many international and private schools in China and other countries and regions in Asia submitted films. The films were reviewed by a panel of international award-winning film makers led by cinematographer Saba Mazloum, who has worked with some of the most outstanding directors in China, such as Tsui Hark, Stephen Chow, Zhang Yimou. The judges selected films for 4 awards: “Best Editing”, “Best Picture”, “Most Educational” and “Most Inspiring”. Films submitted by Daystar Academy, Beijing International Bilingual Academy, and Senri Osaka International School in Japan received the awards.

The awards ceremony was hosted by the students who initiated the contest. The principal, participant students, Daystar Academy parents, and staff from the sponsor Beijing United Family Hospital were all in attendance. Everyone watched the film that won Best Picture and the video sent by the judging panel as part of the awards ceremony.

For the three contest initiators—Daystar Grade 12 students Joshua Sobhani, Dante Jabbari, and Nick Chen—the “Inno-vision” Film Challenge gave them a real-world experience in public speaking, marketing promotion, and event organization.

“The goal of the Inno-Vision Film Challenge is to amplify youth voices by empowering them to make short films with big impact. This goal was achieved!” said the contest initiators. They intend to continue to hold this meaningful event year after year. “Next year, we will make preparations earlier and make more advertisements so that more people can see the wonderful films students make.”

A big congratulations to the winners and the awards sponsor, United Family Hospital. The winning films can we watched on the Inno-Vision website.

Sanlitun student artwork on display at the China Millennium Monument

During the summer holiday, James Thomason and Chinese teacher Su Xia from the Daystar Sanlitun Campus organized the Sustainable Development Summer Camp in response to Daystar’s special project—the Social Innovation Program.

Teachers led Grade 4 and Grade 5 students in participating at the summer camp, where they engaged in different environmental protection-themed activities. Students were inspired and gained a sense of achievement. One of the activities was visiting the ANOBO International Children’s Tech and Art Traveling Exhibition at the China Millennium Monument entitled “A Drop of Water with One World.”

The exhibition emphasizes the need to care about and protect water resources. It creates an immersive atmosphere in which visitors can feel the importance of water via professional exhibition technologies. The students were very excited. After the exhibition, they came back and painted pictures with a “water resources” theme. Daystar teachers sent their artwork to the organizer of “A Drop of Water with One World,” and the pictures will be displayed with the exhibition!

Exhibition of G10 students' Personal Project

“The students have done a fantastic job. Our students’ average score is over 1.5 grades higher than world average. Superb! And We delivered an even better performance from last year!” remarked Jon Howarth, Daystar IBMYP and IBDP Coordinator.

Mr. Howarth also told us that Daystar students have one scheduled Personal Project lesson each week to help guide and support their work for this Project. At the end, each Project is graded first by their Supervisor, and then moderated by up to two more teachers (reviewers). This is much higher than the IB minimum standards, and these processes have really helped the students to achieve this fantastic level of success.

Bravo! Young athletes at the Chongli 168 Ultra Trail

Sports and health are Daystar traditions and have been part of our mission since Daystar was founded. By having a healthy body and strong spirit, students can continue to innovate, pursue excellence, and make a positive difference in the world around them.

That’s why Daystar students never stop exercising, even during breaks. In late July, a few Daystar students participated in the Chongli 168 Ultra Trail and made remarkable achievements!

The students worked hard and managed to complete the race. Once the race was over, the coaches immediately shared how proud they felt via social media: “Participating in the TRY group, the children placed first in the girl’s group and third, fifth, and eighth in the boy’s group. As their coach, I hope they will take part in more competitions in the future… All these experiences will be treasures in their lives. I hope you can keep this spirit forever…”

Daystar baseball player won gold in City Games

Grade 8 Daystar student Justin Cao won a gold medal in the Division II baseball games of the 16th Beijing Games in August.

/////////

Justin Cao has been playing baseball for five years, since starting training in Grade 3.

His coach described him as having a strong body and spirit and quick reflexes, making him an indispensable outfielder who covers a wide defense range.

Before the competition,  Justin has been playing baseball for five years, since starting training in Grade 3. and his teammates had three weeks of intensified training and completed each day of drills successfully.

During the competition, they came up against a rival team that was just as strong. But Justin has been playing baseball for five years, since starting training in Grade 3. remained calm, helped his team keep a high spirit, and scored key points that led to their victory.

His strong heart is a result of his outstanding skills and experience. He often competes with other school teams in friendly matches.

In his school life, Justin is a calm, low-profile, and reliable person. Everyone at Daystar is proud to have such excellent students!
