Excellence is an important core value at Daystar, and we encourage our students to strive to become stronger and better. We not only cultivate academically outstanding students, but also encourage students to develop their own areas of interest and things they are good at.
This past summer, Daystar students explored a variety of fields. Let’s applaud their courage. Their efforts and dedication should be recognized!
We also know that there are many other students with equally exciting achievements!
Daystar Student Attends GCI Summit in Scotland
From July 24 to August 1, Daystar Grade 9 student Kerry Wang went to the University of St Andrews in Scotland to attend the GCI Summit as a Global Citizenship Initiative scholarship recipient.
During the summit, Kerry, along with dozens of students from around the world, received mentorship on designing and carrying out their respective Global Service Projects. They also learned relevant knowledge and skills. For instance, they participated in workshops on design thinking skills, engaged in Harkness Table classes, listened to lectures on how to design and organize activities, and learned about business and entrepreneurship. During the summit, they also had the opportunity to meet local Scottish poets and singers to experience Scottish culture.
Kerry Wang reflected that this was a particularly rare experience– being “thrown into” such completely strange surroundings did more than improve his social and English skills; it also made him realize that the world is facing similar issues:
My global service project aims to promote the development of environmental protection and plastic recycling in Daystar's Beigao campus and Beijing’s Niulanshan community. This is similar to the project focus of participants from the United States and Monaco. The summit also focused on the issue of education equity, which is related to the projects of participants from Vietnam, Ghana, Tunisia and Turkey. This shows that these issues are not isolated phenomena, but issues that humanity needs to face together. Only by working together can we move from being individual points to forming lines of connection. Eventually, we can create a global network to solve many of society’s problems.”
Going forward, Kerry Wang will begin his global service project at the Daystar campus and in the Niulanshan community. Let's support his efforts!
A Visit to Miao Village
During summer vacation, Grade 5 student Aiden Wang took several of his classmates to visit the students in Jidao Miao Village in Guizhou to fulfill his promise of focusing on “high-quality education”.
Aiden visited Jidao Miao Village when he was younger. The lack of educational resources for the students there made a deep impression on him. When planning his Grade 5 PYP graduation exhibition, he chose “high-quality education” as his exhibition theme from the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. He presented on the educational resource situation faced by elementary schools in Jidao Miao Village and created a plan to donate books to students there. For Unity Day in May, he applied for a booth to continue to promote his plan. Ultimately, with the help of his parents, he journeyed to Kaili Jidao Miao Village with his good friends Liu Yuhan, Meng Zixuan, Cai Xinyi, Zhang Kunding and Zhang Jun to deliver the books and donations they had collected.
He and his friends played games with the students in Miao Village, told them about new things outside the mountains, and gave them books and snacks. While eating together, Aiden was deeply touched by the questions students asked about the outside world. This strengthened his determination to help these students. Aiden said: “Next summer, I will continue to do this, but I will strive to do better. I want to bring more friends and introduce them to Miao Village. I also want to create a website to introduce science-related content to the students in Miao Village and collect books for them.”
Achievements in WSC
From August 8th to 14th, 10 Daystar Academy outstanding student representative teams from the World Scholar's Cup Beijing Regional Competition participated in the global competition held in Xiamen. The students performed remarkably, winning a total of 62 gold medals and 87 silver medals, and 7 teams advanced to the finals that will be held at Yale University in the United States in November! Our team coach Ms. Venus Guan also received the award of "Coach of the Year"!
Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) Awards
During summer vacation, Daystar students went to Singapore to participate in the SIMOC. The results have been announced, and two Daystar students won awards: Cherry Niu, a Grade 3 student from Beigao Campus, won both a gold and bronze award, and Shaun Li, a student from Sanlitun Campus, won a bronze award.
More than 1,600 students from 30 countries participated in the competition held in Singapore. Ambassadors from 29 of the participating countries were present at the award ceremony.

Chongli 168 Ultra Trail
Focusing on sports and health is a tradition in the Daystar community. Even during holidays, Daystar students continue to stay active. In July, more than a dozen Daystar students participated in the 10-kilometer Chongli 168 Ultra Trail.
The students gave their all to finish the competition, and won multiple awards, including champion awards, across several age groups. Let's applaud their achievements: Zhou Qin, Liu Yijie, Guo Shangwen, Zhao Ruoqing, Yang Yunda, Wang Ruichen, Lin Heyan, Li Qingmai, Yang Fei and Zhang Muhan!
The students also demonstrated Daystar’s core values of caring and excellence during the competition. “Even though the older students had already finished competing the day before, Wang Ruichen and her friend suddenly appeared the next morning before the competition began for the younger students. They went to the track to encourage and cheer on their younger schoolmates, making several first and second graders particularly happy. In the end, two girls got first and second place, and the boys got third and fourth place!” said the enthusiastic mother of Grade 6 student Yang Yunda.
United Nations 75th Anniversary International Children's Art and Creativity Exhibition
In August, the United Nations 75th Anniversary International Children's Art and Creativity Exhibition and ICAE International Children's Art Exhibition China Tour were held in Beijing. The artworks of 19 Daystar students were shortlisted for exhibition. The exhibition theme centered on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which aligned with the focus of the Daystar Social Innovation Project. This provided a platform for students to express their knowledge and what they have learned in an artistic way.
Amy Gao, a secondary school visual arts teacher, was invited to serve as a judge. Grace Gong, the secondary school Chinese principal, also gave an interview to the media.
“One Tree” on display at the Today Art Museum
In July, the only large tree made of recycled materials made its debut at the Today Art Museum in Beijing. It was created by all of the elementary school students from Sanlitun Campus and the students from Ivy Kindergarten's Sanlitun Campus.
The artwork is titled Big Tree, Our Home and is a life-size ginkgo tree made entirely of recycled materials. It was completed under the guidance of Vivian Gao, an art teacher at Sanlitun Elementary School.
Approximately 300 students from Ivy Kindergarten to Daystar Grade 5 participated in making this tree. The Grade 1 to Grade 4 students made the four seasons of the tree, and the Grade 5 students made the animals! The raw materials included candy wrappings, hangers, old towels, and Sprite bottles. The kindergarten students made the insects.
The method used to create this work is a manifestation of the educational belief held by Daystar: everything is interrelated, and the actions we take today have an impact on the world around us.
