Ren Xianliang meets with Qualcomm

On July 14, Ren Xianliang, Secretary-General of the World Internet Conference (WIC), met with Ye Xiaowei, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm, in Beijing. Ren welcomed Qualcomm’s visit and thanked Qualcomm for its contributions as a Senior Member to the development of the WIC. Ren said that the WIC is committed to building a global Internet platform for extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, creating more opportunities for communication and cooperation among its members, and providing its members with more diverse and targeted services. Ye said that Qualcomm is willing to leverage its advantages to enhance communication and cooperation with the WIC in fulfilling social responsibilities, organizing thematic activities, and developing Internet talent.

Fuxi Institution 

On July 28, Secretary-General Ren Xianliang visited the Beijing headquarters of the Fuxi Institution and listened to the introduction of Xiaodong Lee, founder of the Fuxi Institution. Ren Xianliang acknowledged the achievements of the Fuxi Institution in promoting digital economic development and digital transformation. He said that as a member of the WIC, the Fuxi Institution has consistently supported the WIC’s work. He expressed hopes that it would utilize its expert resources and further leverage its research platform role; combine research with practical applications and facilitate the transfer and commercialization of scientific and technological achievements; utilize its advantages in international exchanges to enhance collaboration with the WIC in areas such as subject studies, talent training, and youth development. Xiaodong Lee said that the Fuxi Institution would make full use of its advantages as a think tank to support the development of the WIC. 

President of the IPv6 Forum

visits the WIC

On July 7, Liang Hao, Executive Deputy Secretary-General of the WIC, met with Latif Ladid, President of the IPv6 Forum. Liang said that the WIC welcomed the recommendation of global partners by the IPv6 Forum and their participation in flagship events such as the 2023 World Leading Internet Scientific and Technological Achievements, and the 2023 Practice Cases of Jointly Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace. He expressed hopes that the IPv6 Forum could introduce and recommend more members and experts to participate in events organized by the WIC. Latif expressed his willingness to introduce more European organizations and experts to China for visits, communication and cooperation. He said that the Ipv6 Forum was willing to support the WIC to hold regional and thematic international conferences, especially in European countries, so as to promote exchanges and cooperation in the Internet and IPv6 industry.

WIC visits Hangzhou and 

Shanghai for field research 

on cross-border e-commerce

From July 11 to 14, the WIC visited Hangzhou and Shanghai to conduct field research on cross-border e-commerce business development, rule-making and implementation, and best practices on trade facilitation. The research team consisted of experts and scholars from the WIC, Beijing Normal University, APEC E-Commerce Business Alliance, China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), and Zhejiang Gongshang University. They conducted field research in China (Hangzhou) Cross-Border E-Commerce Comprehensive Pilot Zone, Shanghai Business Development Research Center, the eWTP (electronic World Trade Platform), Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group, Pinduoduo, Ant Financial, Cainiao, Zhejiang TopSun Holding Group and other organizations.

On June 29, Zhao Ming, CEO of HONOR, attended the Shanghai Mobile World Congress and delivered a keynote speech on the topic of “What’s Next for Smartphones”. Zhao Ming said that new technologies such as AI and 5G+ have brought broad space for the development of the smartphone, the development of smartphone should constantly break the boundaries, integrate new technologies and new categories. On July 2, HONOR released the Magic V2 series products, achieving a closed thickness of 9.9mm, leading foldable phones into the era of millimeter levels.

In early July, Nokia was recognized by GigaOm analysts as an innovation leader and outperformer in the data center switching market for the second year in a row. The solution enables data centers and cloud environments to easily scale, adapt and operate. Nokia’s rapidly expanding data center networking portfolio includes the 7250 IXR product suite of high-performance, high-density modular platforms designed for data center spines and data center wide area network connectivity deployments, and the 7220 IXR suite of high-performance, high-density, fixed configuration platforms for leaf and spine deployments in data centers. 

On July 10, Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel, visited the mainland of China again after three months, who was accompanied by Intel executives, for a series of events in Beijing and Chengdu, including attending the 20th anniversary of the Intel’s base in Chengdu, launching the Habana Gaudi 2, a deep learning accelerator designed specifically for the Chinese market, exchanging views with Chinese customers such as H3C and xFusion, and attending the 14th annual U.S.-China CEO and Former Senior Officials’ Dialogue, which reflects Intel’s strong confidence and commitment to long-term development in China. 

Recently, IBM unveiled watsonx, the next-generation AI and data platform for business generative AI. Enterprises can rapidly train and deploy customized AI across their business while maintaining control over their own data. The IBM watsonx platform consists of three unique product sets: watsonx.ai - an AI development platform for building new foundation models, generative AI, and machine learning; watsonx.data - a fit-for-purpose data store built on open lakehouse architecture; and watsonx.governance - an AI governance toolkit that enables organizations to build accountable, transparent, and explainable end-to-end AI workflows. 

On July 20, Tesla announced its financial results for the second quarter of 2023. In Q2, Tesla produced 479,700 electric vehicles and delivered 466,100 electric vehicles worldwide, breaking both quarterly production and sales records and consolidating Tesla’s position as the global champion of pure electric vehicles. According to the statistics from China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, a major global export hub for Tesla, delivered more than 476,000 China-made electric vehicles, accounting for half of the global deliveries.

Baidu’s Wenxin Big Model has recently been iterated to version 3.5. Compared with version 3.0, the training speed has been increased by 2 times, the reasoning speed has been increased by 30 times, and the cumulative effect has increased by more than 50%, outperforming the GPT3.5. Meanwhile, according to the IDC report, Baidu Wenxin Large Model has achieved a perfect score in 7 indicators, securing its top position in the overall evaluation. In terms of algorithm model and industry coverage, it is the only model achieving a perfect score. Baidu Wenxin is the market leader in terms of industrial application scale in China, with more than 150,000 enterprises applying for access. Baidu worked in partnership with more than 300 partners in the application of Wenxin and good results were achieved in more than 400 scenarios.

Frost & Sullivan recently published a report on the global cloud workload protection platform (CWPP). According to the report, QAX is the world’s largest Chinese CWPP provider and ranks the first in China with a market share of 9.63% in the Asia Pacific region. As a leading cybersecurity provider in China, QAX’s CWPP solutions have gained great popularity in the Chinese market in recent years due to its strong influence. Its CWPP solutions are equipped with rich features to assist customers in addressing their security challenges of workloads and applications in various cloud environments. 

On July 24, Alibaba Group released the 2023 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report. The report shows that in the first year of implementing the seven strategic ESG directions, Alibaba has made significant progress in its ESG actions. The Group achieved “double reductions” - reduction of carbon emissions from the Group’s own operations and reduction of carbon intensity across its value chain, leading to a reduction of carbon emissions by 22.907 million tons. The Alibaba ecosystem has directly or indirectly facilitated over 70 million job opportunities. Alibaba Group has actively practiced its social responsibility in many areas, such as education, aging, and accessibility. ESG is becoming a value linkage between Alibaba Group and its major business groups. 

On July 28, in response to the “Eastern Data and Western Computing” national strategy, Kuaishou held a ceremony to celebrate the operation of its intelligent cloud big data center in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia. This project is the first large-scale Internet data center independently developed and designed by Kuaishou’s technical team, which supports Kuaishou to connect hundreds of millions of users and different industries via short video and live streaming, and create a new type of digital community that supports efficient online-offline integration. At the same time, the project will effectively promote the development of big data industry and digital economy in Ulanqab.
