After attending “online schools” for three years, students and teachers in China are finally meeting their beloved classmates as they move on-site in the upcoming spring semester, with nearly 300 million people expected to return to campuses nationwide.
Authorities asked educational institutions to fully restore the normal operation of teaching activities while preserving the health and safety of students and staff as this was the first batch to be “tested” following China’s downgrading of its COVID-19 management.
Sun Chunlan, the vice premier of China, paid a visit to Peking University and Tsinghua University on Monday before the start of the new semester. She urged all levels of education institutions to thoroughly reestablish the regular operation of instructional activities and implement and optimize pertinent COVID-19 prevention management.
Sun emphasized the need of ensuring the well-being of both students and faculty members as well as the security of campuses.
Schools should do in-depth research on the number of infected students and staff before the semester begins in order to plan for their return in a systematic way. According to Sun, school hospitals should prepare medications in advance and keep track of the campus’s staff members’ health.
She advocated that greater thought and education be given to the mental health of kids and teachers as a result of the effects of COVID-19. To foster a more positive environment, schools should organize extracurricular activities that take into account the needs of all age groups.
Everything is going back to normal now that there are no nucleic acid tests or health codes! Without obtaining permission, students are allowed to enter and exit the campus, and canteens are open for on-campus dining “Wang Wei, a professor at Beijing International Studies University’s School of Interpreting and Translation", said on Tuesday.
As the final three years of online education come to a conclusion, a high school teacher in Beijing with the last name Hua said she can sense the excitement from both herself and her students as well as their peers.
The majority of parents are ecstatic about this news, Hua said while grinning widely. "On-site teaching is far better than online sessions in terms of efficiency and interactivity. We didn’t interact much during the previous semester, so I am eager to see my pupils again." She spoke.
The mandated reporting of trips outside of Beijing has been discontinued, and Hua’s school is now gathering information on the prevalence of diseases, the status of vaccinations, and underlying physical issues among students and employees. Face masks and body temperature checks are still necessary, though.
According to a teacher from Shanghai’s Qibao Wenlai School with the last name Tang, wearing a mask is no longer required and there are no specific rules for epidemic prevention in his school.
"The start of the new semester, when regular face-to-face instruction may take place, is anticipated by both teachers and pupils. We hope that everything will go back to normal as it was before the pandemic so that the effects on educational activities are as little as possible."said Tang.
In the latest guidebook on epidemic prevention and control issued by the State Council, schools that have not reported COVID-19 infections can restore on-site teaching normally. Health monitoring will be conducted for seven consecutive days after students and faculty return to campus, and schools should minimize gatherings.
Higher education institutions will no longer conduct nucleic acid screening for all members, but will conduct nucleic acid or antigen testing for key personnel engaged in catering, logistics, security and cleaning on campus, the guidebook said.
It stated that no longer are teachers and students at all levels of educational institutions obliged to present the results of a nucleic acid test in order to access or leave the campus.
