• Number of appointment slots and office hours to be extended
• Holders of visas issued before March 2020 will need to reapply to visit
Following the reopening of China’s borders two months ago, visa demand has increased, especially among Chinese overseas and business travelers. As a result, the Chinese embassy in the United States plans to issue more visas.
The choice was taken “to further optimize the service and better satisfy the demand for visa applications in the current situation,” the embassy said in a statement late on Friday.
There would be more appointments available for visa applications, and office hours would be extended “as necessary,” it stated.
As part of China’s efforts to stop the importation of infectious diseases, US individuals having visas, especially multiple-year multi-entry visas, issued before March 2020 are not permitted to enter the country.
The embassy announced last month that long-term visa holders needed to apply for a new one if they wanted to visit China because visas granted prior to March 2020 could not be used because the majority of them were for tourists.
The embassy added that multiple-year visa holders could “still go to China after the visa is reinstated” on Friday.
The embassy advised waiting to “avoid the current peak of visa applications and schedule application judiciously” for individuals who “have no urgent or special reasons to come to China in the near future”.
After China reopened its borders, visa issuance has largely recovered, and because demand is so strong, it typically takes weeks to obtain a visa. The procedure used to take days before the pandemic.
