On May 5, the Jiangxi Province’s Nanchang City’s Xinjian Public Security Bureau effectively uncovered a telecom fraud case that targeted foreigners.
The police detained 5 individuals, all male, in a remote rental home after employing technology to confirm the suspects’ whereabouts. They also seized 39 mobile phones, 5 PCs, and 9 phone cards.
“We only target foreigners and overseas persons for scams,” the suspect claimed when interrogated by the police.
The fraud was initiated in June 2022 by the group, who used a VPN and WhatsApp chat software to pose as wealthy, attractive Chinese women and communicated with victims using a planned professional script.
Through extensive communication and the sharing of personal images, the suspects won the trust of the victims, who were then persuaded to invest in phoney gold platforms in order to commit fraud.
The gang has stolen more than 900,000 yuan as of May 5.
The public security services have right now detained five suspects in accordance with the law.
They are subject to fines and a three to ten-year prison sentence under the statute.
