The boss of an electronics factory in Dongguang, South China's Guangdong province, fired 2 just-employed workers because they had tattoos, sparking a debate among netizens.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍

In her defense, she told reporters that an employee with tattoos may affect the overall atmosphere at the factory and have a bad influence on other employees.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍

A video that has since gone viral online and shared on multiple short-video platforms shows the boss talking to two new male employees, telling them that her company could not accept employees with tattoos.‍

"We don't recruit workers with tattoos, not even a small tattoo. Let me make it clear to both of you, if you have a tattoo, you have ruined your future," the boss was filmed telling the two new employees.‍‍

She later told the said employees: "You can use temporary tattoo stickers for a fashionable appearance, but permanent tattoos give a bad impression and are neither socially acceptable nor show a sign of obedience."‍‍‍‍‍

One of the employees was filmed having a huge tattoo on his right arm.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍

Netizens defended the employees, condemning the boss as discriminating against people who make choices for their own bodies. However, some other netizens sided with the boss.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍

"You have the choice/freedom to have a tattoo, but the boss also has a choice to refuse to hire people with one." Commented one netizen.

She talked some sense into them and both of them regretted their decision, vowing to laser-clean the tattoos.

Zhao told reporters that tattoos by themselves don't affect work, but her company does not encourage young people to use their bodies as a canvas, and as the boss, she is responsible to educate and guide young employees to better use their bodies.

While some netizens accused Zhao of discrimination, she maintained that she does not discriminate against anyone, and welcomes the two to join her factory when they get their tattoos laser-cleaned.

The two agreed to get rid of their tattoos!

Our reporter called the Dongguan HR and Social Security Service Hotline, 12333, and the staff stated that the local labor law does not explicitly stipulate employment restrictions for individuals with tattoos. However, the company has the right to choose whether to hire workers according to its own rules and regulations.
