What happened: On June 11, the event apparently took place at an unidentified upscale eatery in Beijing's Ganjiakou Sub district.
The suspect, named only by his last name Chen, warned the employees about a cockroach he discovered in the food he ordered, the restaurant manager told the local media.The manager claimed that although they gave Chen a free new dish, he declined and walked out after paying for his meal. The personnel at the business observed Chen's cool demeanor throughout the incident.He allegedly called the restaurant later and demanded payment for his dinner equal to 10 times what he spent, or 2,800 yuan (about $392), or he would write about the incident online.Negotiating with Chen, the manager is said to have given in to his requests, transferring 1,000 yuan (about $139) to the man and also offering to buy him a pack of smokes as payment.Finding the extortion: It is unknown how the restaurant staff member investigated the cockroach Chen claimed to have seen and determined it was not a product of his food.Police were notified of the event by the restaurant, and they were able to track down and apprehend the man in his hotel room.What they found: According to reports, the man utilized a can of chewing gum to hold cockroaches that he imported from his hometown and fried later for his fraud.Local law enforcement discovered throughout their investigation that similar incidents had previously happened at other businesses.Chen later admitted what he had done, saying that he was out of money and without a job. Police claimed that by employing the same strategy he did at the Beijing eatery, he was able to extort businesses for about 3,000 yuan (about $419).
