Mr. Liu from Zhengzhou, north-central China's Henan Province, said he came across an article published by the Zhengzhou University Self Study Examination Office while searching for information about self-taught exams.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
In the article, he said, a paragraph advised students that they can put "notes" in a place where teachers could not see while they are defending their thesis online. The article added that this can help the defending students refer to the notes in case they forget some words.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Liu thought to himself "This is cheating!" and took screenshots of the article. He published the screenshots on social media with a caption that read "Isn't cheating a violation of discipline?"‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
As the posts were making rounds on social media, some netizens said that it was normal as an online thesis defense can not be compared to an exam.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
"Who said thesis defense is a closed exam and who banned bringing notes?" Wrote one netizen. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
"The office used a common saying, that's all. Don't confuse thesis defense reference materials with cheating during exams." Added another.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Some people also said that the office's article might have been written and published by a student, explaining the wrong choice of words.
On September 25th, the staff of the Zhengzhou University Self Study Examination Office told reporters that it was just a misunderstanding due to the poor choice of words.
They added - online defense is open, and candidates can bring their papers with them and some reference materials to facilitate the defense. However, if the defense teacher sees them, they may think that the candidate is not very proficient in their paper or the materials they have prepared
The words "notes"/"copies" referred to the reference materials, which is common and is not considered cheating.
The staff concluded that they would change the wording next time.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Reporters noticed that the article was published on September 18, advising students on preparations before thesis defense.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
"Don't be nervous! After all, it's an online defense. If you're afraid that you will forget words, you can even put a 'note' in a place where the camera can't capture it. The teachers won't be too strict..." Read a part of the article.
