This Christmas, a Haughton family will still have an empty chair at the dinner table, they say. That is because their son is currently imprisoned in southwest China's Chongqing. His wife and children have also not seen him for about 10 years now.
The family of Nelson Wells Jr., a Bossier City man, said they have been trying to get their son back on American soil to help with his medical needs, however, they have depleted all their savings in process.Nelson was arrested in 2014 on suspicions of carrying a "large amount of drugs," an allegation that his family says has not been proved. His father says Nelson went into prison weighing 77 Kgs, but at last check, Nelson Sr. says he weighed less than 45 Kgs. They had worked with lawyers and authorities to help remove him from death row and he was given a 20 years sentence instead. ▲Nelson and his mother before he was imprisonedHowever, Othello Totimeh, 35, a former prisoner who spent time in the same cell as Nelson Wells Jr., estimates he weighs even less than that now.The family says they now see a glimmer of hope after U.S. Congressional lawmakers took notice of the case.
Nelson's parents have met with representatives from House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office, Senator Bill Cassidy’s office, and Senator John Kennedy’s office.“Mike Johnson was the only one that called and explained everything, what he can and cannot do,” said Nelson Wells Sr.“Johnson has been quite helpful. That is what makes me think we are getting closer,” a British person who is following the case closely told reporters. In the meantime, the Wells family is relying on faith to get them through another holiday without their son.
