SOUND SEGREGATION

Artist: He Chi

Date: 2018.11.3 – 2019.1.13

Hunsand Space will present He Chi’s solo exhibition “Sound Segregation” on November 3, 2018.

He Chi’s life and creating process are mingled, and thus there is no clear demarcation between work and life in his works. This can be seen in his past work “So Forget”. In August 2014, He Chi’s father suddenly passed away. He Chi returned to his hometown, trying to live a “meaningless life”, just as his father did. His mother kept record of this process through a camera.

When we gaze at the scenes through the lens, it seems hard to perceive it in terms of a work. What we see is He Chi rooted deeply in life along with the vitality emitting from the body. Such a way of life and being is ordinary and transient yet touching. He Chi’s works are able to generalize this emotional energy that is usually difficult to capture.

“Sound Segregation” is one of such works. He Chi spent the whole year of 2017 singing songs. He sang with “Changba”, a mobile app, and lived another period of “meaningless” life, as he claims that it is the same with all ways of life. Perhaps the lack of meaning is the whole meaning of life. The everyday life of the individual has broken away from the oppression and kidnap of meaning -- perhaps it is due to this that the texture of life, its warmth and coldness, as well as its numbness and pains can transmit artlessly and vividly when one listens to He Chi’s singing alone, as if it were a part of one’s own secret and private life.

Regarding the logic of artistic expression, “Sound Segregation” is akin to another work of his: “Next Door” presented in Arrow Factory in Beijing. In the process of creating “Next Door”, He Chi spent a spring meaninglessly. He followed his bodily perception and complied with the natural changes of the surroundings. Spring has arrived. The elm behind Arrow Factory was becoming greener, as was everything in the surroundings. Similarly, he painted the interior of Arrow Factory with greener and greener colors without alluding to a certain meaning.

At first glance, one does not need to be present in the exhibition to learn about these two projects. It seems as if one could grasp them merely through imagination. However, it is when one is physically immersed in the work that the senses can be infiltrated. It is as if one takes a rest after a long and tiring journey: the heart rate fluctuates; time slows down; what is real is intensified and highlighted, as if one had experienced it before…

Life is a form of art. A unique period in the life of an individual is a unique work and also a mirror in which others see their own lives. When one gazes at and listens to others, one is also perceiving and reviewing one’s own present. If the life during the creating of “SoundSegregation” is denial or self-segregation, “Sound Segregation” as an artwork is communication, exchange, embrace, care, and recognition between specific individuals.

“Thereof could I sing a song — and WILL sing it: though I be alone in an empty house, and must sing it to mine own ears.

Other singers are there, to be sure, to whom only the full house maketh the voice soft, the hand eloquent, the eye expressive, the heart wakeful:—those do I not resemble. He who one day teacheth men to fly will have shifted all landmarks; to him will all landmarks themselves fly into the air; the earth will he christen anew—as “the light body.”

The ostrich runneth faster than the fastest horse, but it also thrusteth its head heavily into the heavy earth: thus is it with the man who cannot yet fly.

Heavy unto him are earth and life, and so WILLETH the spirit of gravity! But he who would become light, and be a bird, must love himself: —thus do I teach.”

                                                                                  — Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra

He Chi was born in Gansu in 1978. He graduated from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in 2002. In 2011, he founded and joined in Xiong Huang Group. In 2012, He initiated “We Said Let There Be Space and There Was Space”.
