Exploring 'A World of Beauty' from ancient Rome
Beauty is the flame of love, attraction, adventure and conquest.
"A World of Beauty: Masterpieces from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples" is currently underway at the Museum of Art Pudong through April 9.
The exhibition, sponsored by Shanghai Lujiazui (Group) Co Ltd, is co-organized by the Museum of Art Pudong and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
In the eyes of many, ancient Rome was a world more colorful than one can imagine, a place where beauty lived and shimmered in the refined forms of the everyday objects of life.
The exhibition displays the allure of ancient times, a form of beauty preserved to this day with its original shapes and shades. Beauty experienced in the Roman civilization of the first and second centuries reveals itself to us through the splendor of sculptures, paintings, mosaics bronzes and glasses from the Farnese collection as well as the archeological excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
The exhibition on the first and third floors of the museum again manifests how critical lighting is.
Stepping into the exhibition space, visitors are immediately captivated by the marble statue bathed in light under a dark backdrop, such is the "Statue of Amazon on Horseback."
It depicts an Amazon as she falls from her rearing mount, due to her hair being grasped by an adversary. The female warrior is depicted using the customary iconography: her right breast bare due to the Amazon's use of the bow and a shield on her left arm.
The glassware of the Romans reveals a wide variety of techniques and forms adapted to various day-to-day functions. They ranged from the architectural use of glass in small and large windows, to distinctive items and components such as the glass variant of the cameo or funeral vessels and ornaments.
The interior of the Roman villas and public buildings shone with a kaleidoscope of colors, shades, mosaics, frescoes, and all sorts of small wonders. All are living expressions of the taste and styles prevalent in Rome and in the provinces of its empire. Visitors might be able to imagine the glorious past through some of the mosaics on display.
There is no better than the clips from the movie "La Grande Bellezza" at the end of the exhibition, a love letter written to the city.
