"The Proof of Early China: The Civilizations of Songze and Liangzhu," held at the Shanghai Museum, officially opened to the public yesterday.

Visitors admire precious exhibits at

"The Proof of Early China."

This is the first and largest prehistoric archeological civilization exhibition in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, featuring 358 unearthed cultural relics from 19 museums and archeological institutions across the country. More than one-third of the cultural relics on display are newly excavated and making debut at the exhibition.

The exhibition focuses on the great achievements of the first development peak in Chinese civilization represented by the Songze and Liangzhu cultures, dating back 5,800 to 4,300 years ago.

The exhibition showcases archeological evidence of over 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, divided into four sections ― ancient countries, rice farming, handicrafts and jade ware ― allowing visitors to appreciate the charm of prehistoric culture and arts in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Chu Xiaobo, director of Shanghai Museum, said that the "king of cong,” a long hollow piece of jade with rectangular sides weighing about 6.5 kilograms, is the treasure of the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, and will only be on display for 20 days. The Lingjiatan site's unearthed "stone pig," weighing 88 kilograms, will be exhibited for just one month.
