题目：
Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
思路：
如果仅是从字面去理解这个题目，会非常难，以至于完全无话可说。因此我首先分析了这个提议背后可能的原因有哪些，或者它希望能有哪些收益，然后从公平性、必要性和合理性几个角度提出自己的看法。
需要特别注意的是，这个题目里的“subject”的意思是专业，和“course”和“major”属同义词，比如牛津大学本科专业列表页面正好就同时用了“course”和“subject”这两个词。

There has been a proposal that colleges should admit an equal number of males and females regardless of major. I disagree with it because it is misguided and will not bring benefits it intends to.
Undoubtedly, the idea has some noteworthy merits. In recruiting the same proportion of both sexes, the idea wishes to make sure that no gender is discriminated against in college admissions. Perhaps it also aims to make the student body as diverse as possible by not having one sex disproportionately more than the other. A third reason may be that males and females can complement each other in class and make learning more effective.
Admittedly, these are all legitimate concerns, and yet the proposal is problematic in a few respects. First, even though it appears to practice equality of gender, this is not how it should be achieved. In fact, as long as gender is not given particular weight in admissions, its equality is guaranteed. Second, it is unnecessary for each subject to have the same number of students, because males and females tend to have markedly different inclinations towards academic disciplines, with men more keen on sciences and engineering and women more into arts and languages in general. Students should be given the freedom to select what they want to concentrate on. On the other hand, if the goal is to have a diverse and dynamic classroom, maybe admissions should be based on students' backgrounds, religions, interests, nationalities and other factors.
In conclusion, despite the recommendation's recognition and advocacy of gender equality, it is flawed, ineffective and even counterproductive. There are other measures that can make learning in classroom effective and fun.
