In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.
思路：
这个题目比较熟悉，关键在于列出间隔年的优点和缺点，并充分展开观点。
我列出的优点有：更好地认识自己，了解自己的兴趣、倾向和长处；在经济方面做好更充分的准备；积累实际工作经验。同时我还讨论了两种特殊人群，即高中课程非常严苛的学生和不确定专业的学生。
缺点有：十大几岁这个年龄段的不可再生性；学生规划不合理导致的问题；短期收入的诱惑和满足于舒适的生活方式的坏处。此外，我还提到了本科学位在求职中起到的敲门砖作用。

It has been trendy in many countries where students take a gap year between high school and college. Such practice has clear benefits and downsides for young people, no matter where they are from.
Advantages abound. Students who choose to spend a year typically have a solid reason for doing so. Some seek to better understand themselves, their interests, passions, propensities, and above all their strengths, whereas others expect to be better prepared financially and get some hands-on experience in the real world. For those who have undergone a highly rigorous high school curriculum and those who are uncertain about their academic focus, taking a year off offers a especially good chance for them to relax and try different jobs before deciding on the right course. In so doing, when students enter college, they will be better prepared and have a clearer sense of purpose.
With all the advantages come inevitable disadvantages. Clearly, late teen years are formative years for many youths, and once gone, they cannot be redeemed. If students who opt for a year off have not mapped out their plan clearly or have failed to follow their plan, they are likely to regret it in the future. Also, some students run the risk of being lured to short-term monetary gains and become complacent about their life style. As a result, it is quite possible that they will end up not attending university at all. This will have high long-term costs, because the job market is turning increasingly competitive, and a college degree is a passport to many desirable jobs.
In sum, it is hard to say whether taking a gap year is a sensible idea for individuals, and it is to the students' benefit to carefully weigh the pros against the cons and deliberate all the possible plans before coming to a conclusion.
