Introduction of Physics Discipline at Fudan University
The Physics Discipline at Fudan has grown out of a long and distinguished tradition. In 1952, the Department of Physics was founded after unifying physics departments of 8 universities in East China, including Fudan University, Jiaotong University, Tongji University,Zhejiang University, Hujiang University, and Datong University. The earlier faculty members of the department, including Fushan Wang, Xide Xie, Shixun Zhou,Hefu Lu and Fujia Yang, set high standards for research and education. The continuous efforts of their successors to meet and surpass these high standards have led to the department becoming one of the top centers for physics research and education in China and East Asia.
The Physics Discipline at Fudan includes5 subsidiary disciplines: theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, optics, atomic/molecular/optical physics, high energy physics, and astrophysics. Fudan Physics has 4 state-funded key labs, including one National Key Laboratory of Applied Surface Physics and three Ministry of Education Key Laboratories for Computational Physical Sciences, Micro- and Nanophotonics, and Applied Ion Beam Physics.
There are a total of 116 faculty members working in the Physics Discipline at Fudan, including over 40 excellent young faculty recruited over the past 5 years as the result of a strategic fast expansion period. Twenty-two faculty members have served as associate editorsor on editorial boards for major international scientific journals, and twenty-five faculty members have served in the organizational committees of ~90international conferences. The physics faculty includes 9 national academy members, 3 senior and 15 junior national “Thousand Talents” distinguished professors, 5 fellows of the American Physical Society, 18 Chinese NSF early career awardees, and 8 “Changjiang Scholar” distinguished professors. The physics faculty has a notable international background, with 9 foreign members from the US, Italy, Australia, and Japan.
The goal of the Fudan Physics is todevelop into one of the leading Physics departments, for both education and research. To achieve this goal, Fudan physics will continue its success in recruiting internationally renowned physicists, developing strong and balanced education and research programs in all of the 5 sub-disciplines of physics, and by continuing to improve the atmosphere for faculty members to carry out creative and innovative research. The recent completion of a new Physics Building with 270,000 square feet of office and lab space and a 10,000 squarefeet nanofabrication clean is an excellent indicator of, Fudan Physics’commitment to pursue groundbreaking scientific discoveries, generate new transformational technologies, and, most importantly, to produce graduates with real-world experience in a state-of-the-art research environment that will allow them to seemlessly transition to top graduate programs or directly to modern industrial facilities.
