A young girl and her family were left shaken after a large sea lion grabbed her and pulled her underwater near Vancouver.

The girl was sitting on a dock in Richmond watching the animal in the water before it grabbed her dress and pulled her into the water.

Onlookers at Steveston Fisherman’s Wharf screamed and a man thought to be a relative of the girl jumped in and lifted her to safety. She appeared physically unharmed.

The sea lion appeared to have been drawn to the dock by people who were throwing bread crumbs into the water.

The incident was caught on video by a student, Michael Fujiwara.

“The sea lion actually attracted a lot of attention from the visitors there, including the young girl,” he told the Vancouver Sun. “She and her family, I guess, they came, they started feeding the animal bread crumbs or whatever it was, and then I guess the animal got a little too comfortable.

“They were pretty shaken up,” Fujiwara told CBC News. “Her family were just in shock.”

Prof Andrew Trites, the director of the marine mammal research unit at the University of British Columbia, said the sea lion was not at fault.

“My first reaction to the video is just how stupid some people can be to not treat wildlife with proper respect,” he told CBC News. “This was a male California sea lion. They are huge animals. They are not circus performers. They’re not trained to be next to people.”

Trites said the sea lion in the video looked like it was used to having people feed it.

“The little girl has her back to the sea lion and it would appear that the sea lion sees part of her dress, thinks it’s food, reaches up, grabs at the food and pulls her in by the dress. But it wasn’t food, of course.”

Trites said he hoped the video of the encounter would teach people not to feed wild animals like sea lions.

He said: “You keep your distance. Watch the animals, but let wildlife be wildlife.”

Slow loris

This animal might look like a harmless, big-eyed baby ewok, but the slow loris is one of the only venomous mammals in the world. Its subtle nature makes it popular in the illegal pet trade, but this furry creature also carries a toxin that is released from the brachial gland on the sides of its elbows. If threatened, the loris can take the toxin into its mouth and mix it with saliva. The animal may also lick or rub its hair with this mixture to deter predators from attack. The toxin can cause death by anaphylactic shock in some people.

Bears 熊

Bears are some of the most lovable large carnivores in the world, often the subject of childhood tales and treasured as teddy bears. It's a strange association, given that they are also on the shortlist of animals known to hunt and kill humans. Grizzlies and polar bears are the most feared, but all large species of bear can potentially be dangerous — even the vegetarian giant panda.

Leopard seal

The leopard seal is at the top of the food chain in its home in the Antarctic and rank alongside killer whales as top predator, which you don't want to swim with. It is bold, powerful and curious, and it has been known to hunt people, although it usually targets penguins.

Elephant 大象

The elephant is often portrayed as a lovable giant, and animals domesticated by trainers and zookeepers can be quite peaceful. But if agitated, abused or if encountered in the wild, an elephant can be one of the most dangerous creatures in the world. Elephants experience unexpected bouts of rage and are known to be vindictive. In India, hundreds of people are killed by mistreated or rampaging elephants. According to the National Geographic Channel documentary "Elephant Rage," some 500 people are killed by elephant attacks each year.

Siberian chipmunks

Chipmunks are small squirrel-like rodents native to North America and Asia. The chipmunk stands about six inches from nose to tail, and has been known to burst suddenly into a harmonious melody if they hear the tickled ivories of a well tuned piano.

Their aggression is although cute in a way that at most they will try to snatch a sandwich from you at a picnic. Then what exactly I’m talking about deadly is the possibility of harboring a disease. Siberian Chipmunks have been reported as spreading throughout many areas of the world, bringing with them, ticks (Lyme disease) and rabies. If the disease remains undetected and left untreated, heart and neurological problems can ensue, followed by coma and death.

Kittens 小猫

It’s sad, but true: cats, the gods of the Internet, can be deadly to humans. More specifically, they can be a danger to pregnant women. It turns out that they can cause an infection called Toxoplasmosis that’s passed into their stool and can cause problems for pregnant women, including abortion. It’s sad, but true. Why, cats? Why?!

Husky

Most temperament descriptions of Husky-type breeds include such words as "outgoing" and "friendly." However, this breed was responsible for 15 dog bite-related fatalities from 1979-1988, ranking it fourth on the CDC's list.

States like Florida have a very specific definition of dangerous dog, which is as follows: has aggressively bitten, attacked, endangered, or inflicted severe injury on a human on public/private property; has more than once severely injured or killed a domestic animal while off an owner's property; been used primarily or in part for dog fighting; or has when unprovoked chased/approached a person on the streets, sidewalks, etc. in a menacing fashion or attitude of attack (need 1 or more witnesses).

Bottlenose dolphin

These guys save humans. Dolphins have been compared to humans on a number of fronts. They are intelligent, communicate with each other, have the ability to learn, do tricks, play jokes, and can almost use their fins as hands. Dolphins have won their way into our hearts.

However, dolphins can be violent. Not only have they been known to kill and maim their own young, they also kill porpoises and play with their dead carcass for no apparent reason other than its fun. Male dolphins particularly show aggression towards human males when there’s a female involved. Why? Sexual competition. They may also drown your wife while attempting to steal her away and mate with her.

The raccoon

Raccoons can be a nuisance when they turn over your trash or steal your food while camping, but their adorable little masked faces make up for all that. They seem so pet-worthy; if you could ever get a hold of one you just know you and he’d be friends forever.

But they may attack the crap out of you. Raccoons without a fear of humans are a concern to those who attribute this trait to rabies, but scientists point out that this behavior is much more likely to be a behavioral adjustment to living in habitats with regular contact to humans for many generations. Although serious attacks on humans by groups of non-rabid raccoons are extremely rare, at least few such attacks have been documented.

Giant pandas

Pandas have large round faces, big dark patches that make their eyes look bigger, and a childlike curiosity. Their seemingly lazy attitude to eating – sitting on their bottoms with their legs sticking out while chewing fistfuls of bamboo – only makes them seem more endearing.

Yet, while they might seem cuddly and even charming at times, giant pandas are still bears and, much like Kung Fu Panda, are not to be underestimated.

They have evolved extra muscles around their jaws to help them crush the tough bamboo they live on. That means pandas have one of the most powerful bites of all mammals in the Carnivora group. Their paws are also tipped with six large claws, which are dexterous but can also deliver a formidable swipe. In the wild, they are partial to a bit of meat to supplement their otherwise vegetarian diet, often killing and eating small mammals like pika.
