All Gender Restrooms Take Off In Beijing
By Justine Lopez
We’ve discussed Beijing’s obsession with toilets before, but now the city is taking its so-called 'toilet revolution' in a whole different direction. The capital officially launched a campaign to promote gender-neutral restrooms in the capital last month, and the movement is gaining a lot of attention.
The campaign was launched by the Beijing Gender Health Education Institute (BGHEI) in May. Since then the NGO has been requesting bars, restaurants and offices around the city to replace traditional male/female signs with the 'all gender' restroom logo, People's Daily reports. There are now roughly 30 restrooms in Beijing that are open to all genders. The goal is to make life a little bit easy for transgender people, especially those with children.
Stroll down Gulou Dong Dajie and you might just spot signs for restrooms that feature this new, all-gender logo (pictured above). The logo features a person in a dress, a person in pants and a person dressed in a half-dress, half-pants outfit. Certain NGOs, such as the UN Women and the UN Development Program, have supported the initiative and also offer all-gender facilities in their offices.
BGHEI has announced plans to release a map marking the location of every all-gender restroom in Beijing.
