Nearly 10,000 People Applied For This One Job in Beijing

What do you think is the most sought after job in China? If you think it's some fancy role at Alibaba or perhaps a position at one of the big four banks, then you'd be wrong.

Apparently the most sought after job in the entire country is head receptionist at the China Democratic League in Beijing. Job duties include [drumroll please...] arranging events and organizing meetings.

While that may not sound like exciting work, the decent salary and chance to live in the capital seems to be what drew 9,504 people to apply.

In addition to the pay and location, the role is also a route to membership in the Chinese Communist Party, something which brings additional status and benefits to citizens.

The registration deadline for China’s Civil service exams was on Monday. During the application process, candidates were required to select the roles they were most interested in. And according to the stats, it seems that this receptionist job in Beijing was the one in highest demand.

So why was the role so popular? Relatively low requirements for the position apparently drew many graduates to apply. According to the official recruitment site, the role only requires a bachelor’s degree and at least two years of work experience.

Think that's competitive? In India, over 2.3 million Indians applied for 368 civil service jobs last year.
