The anime classic “Spirited Away” will finally be screened in Chinese cinemas for the first time, 18 years after it was released in Japan.
While the official release date has yet to be announced, it’s been confirmed that “Spirited Away” will be Studio Ghibli’s second theatrical release in China, following last year’s release of “My Neighbor Totoro”.
Directed by industry legend Hayao Miyazaki, the movie was first released in Japan in 2001, and became the highest grossing movie in Japanese box office history, earning a total of 30.8 billion yen — a record it still holds today. It also went on to win Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003.
There’s a famous quote somewhere along the line that says “Disney movies touch the heart but Studio Ghibli films touch the soul.”
As sentimental as it might sound, it’s true when it comes to “Spirited Away”, which has acquired a cult following in China over the decades.
Shortly after the news of the official release was announced, nostalgic Chinese fans took to social media to welcome the film’s big screen arrival, creating some 130,000 discussions on China’s Twitter-like Weibo that were mostly filled with emotional words.
“One of my childhood dreams was to marry Haku,” gushed a fan on Weibo, referring to the film’s male lead.
“My daughter was named after the heroine Chihiro — I can finally take her to see this movie and tell her all about it,” wrote another.
When did you first see “Spirited Away”?
“Spirited Away” is the story of a 10-year-old girl named Ogino Chihiro who gets trapped in a mythical world and must find the inner strength to survive and also save her parents from a witch’s curse.
As simple as the premise may be, it’s a film for everybody, not just children.
It’s often said that Miyazaki’s films are more for adults than the children. That’s because, while he always makes films that come from a child’s perspective, he never condescends to children by making his films simplistic. His films tackle modern problems without being rhetorical, inviting audiences to think about and discuss the themes within.
In “Spirited Away”, you will see greedy people transformed into pigs, lonely creatures fawning over popular ones; you’ll see the Stink Spirit who is actually a River God that has been badly injured by human pollution; you also see beautiful connections between Chihiro and Haku — be it romantic, platonic or somewhere between.
All of these fascinating plots come together and make “Spirited Away” a timeless movie with something for everyone.
