The secretary-general of the United Nations is the head of the United Nations Secretariat. The role is considered the chief administrative officer of the UN. Under the United Nations Charter, the Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. They are elected from among UN member states, but not from the five permanent members. He was born in Oslo in 1896. He once met with Lenin, and was a champion of the October Revolution, but then changed his tune after "upheaval in January." He was an assistant professor of political economy at Stockholm University. He served in the Swedish cabinet, but never joined a political party. He was also the first UN Secretary-General to visit China. In 1961, while on a peace mission in Congo. Hammarskjold was killed in a plane crash.
