A group of former students in east China's Zhejiang Province has been voluntarily donating money to the parents of their middle school teacher who passed away in a car accident.

Video of 72 students visiting the deceased teacher's parents has gone viral on Chinese social media, with about 7.6 million of views and more than 168,000 likes.

Chen Yongfeng, a social studies teacher at the former Caoqiao Middle School in Pinghu, a county-level city in Zhejiang Province, died in a car accident in 2002, at the age of 28.

For Chen's students, he was a confident and beloved teacher, who always had faith in them and encouraged them at school.

The sudden death was a great shock for his students, and of course his parents that find themselves alone.

Cao Yuping, now a university teacher, was one of Chen's students. She was also one of the initiators of the activity.

Although Cao graduated many years ago, she still kept her teacher in mind and looked over his parents, hoping to offer some help.

"I was young at that time and had no way to help. When I grew up and found a job, I began looking for Chen's parents. However, since his parents had moved to another place, it took me a while to find them," said Cao.

After many twists and turns, she finally managed to find Chen's parents in 2016. During a classmate reunion party, she and her classmates mentioned Chen. After knowing that his parents had some difficulties, some of her classmates suggested that they send money for his parents every month.

Soon, they formed an online chat group and began donating money. Each person donates 30 yuan (4.4 U.S. dollars) per month.

"Every month we donate some money and save it. During the Mid-Autumn Festival or Spring Festival, we visit the parents, chat with them and follow up on their health," said Tang Bin, one of Chen's students.

"I think it's quite meaningful. Thirty yuan is only a small amount of money and it won't cause any pressure to anyone. I think it is important to stick to it," said one of Chen's students Tang Xiao.

As the donation continued, more students joined their campaign. So far, 72 students have taken part in the activity. Apart from donating money, they visit Chen's parents twice a year, hoping to bring some warmth to the old couple.

"We just want them to know that there's still a group of people remembering and thinking about their deceased son," Cao said.

"We hope to pass on the love and take care of them," said Tang.

Elderly care has always been an important issue in China. In 2015, authorities in Zhejiang Province issued policies to support and care about special one-child family, including the families who lost their only child.

According to the policy, families with a single child disabled or deceased can receive special subsidies of up to 500 yuan per person per month. For families with couples who cannot take care of themselves, the subsidies can reach to 700 yuan per month.
