Difficulties in securing vaccines have meant developing countries are turning to China for help, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday. "Wealthier nations have locked up so many doses of Western vaccines — in some cases securing contracts for two or three times their populations," it said. The report also indicated that many developing countries might have to wait until 2023 for widespread inoculations.
A growing number of countries across the world have turned to Chinese COVID-19 vaccines as Western vaccine makers' production and delivery hiccups hamper the fight against the pandemic in many countries.
As Hungary joined Serbia in spearheading mass inoculation with China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine in Europe, other European countries are struggling against a vaccine delivery crisis and exploring a way out of lockdown and into economic recovery.
Since the arms race for a coronavirus vaccine, there have been calls for cooperation in vaccine development and distribution in order to avoid the intensification of "vaccine nationalism."
Global organizations and experts have shown concern about the practice of developed countries to buy out the vast majority of vaccine supplies around the world. Once the first batch of vaccines is sold out by rich countries, there is no guarantee that poor countries could get their share.
For the world to fully realize the full power of COVID-19 vaccines, government's need to "donate doses now", according to the World Health Organization Director-General, Tedros Adhanom.
The WHO chief noted that the longer it takes to suppress the virus, the more opportunity it has to mutate, hence risk making vaccines less effective.
He assured that there will be enough jabs for everyone because more vaccines will continue to be developed, approved and produced.
