Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to meet his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden at the 18th-century Villa La Grange in Geneva on Wednesday.Though the summit offers an opportunity for the two countries to reopen dialogue, both the Kremlin and the White House have said they didn't expect any major breakthroughs or a real rapprochement in bilateral ties.
Conflict alternating with negotiation, discord intertwined with agreement – this is what happened in the 100 days prior to the meeting offering a vivid microcosm of bilateral ties between Russia and the U.S. since the Cold War.Russia called its U.S. ambassador back to Moscow for consultations on March 17 after U.S. President Joe Biden described his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as a "killer" who would "pay a price" for election meddling. "We are going to be straightforward, and we are going to be direct, in areas where we have concerns," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during her daily news conference. Her remarks came hours after Russia recalled its U.S. ambassador.
How is it different? President Biden and his diplomatic advisor appear to be pursuing a hard-line policy toward Russia.
As for the tough attitude of the United States, "During the Cold War, the tensions were flying high, and risky crisis situations often emerged, but there was also a mutual respect," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during an interview.
Russia-U.S. ties have become increasingly adversarial recently. However, there are still areas for potential cooperation, such as nuclear arms control, the Iran nuclear deal, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and climate change.Thorny issues on the agenda are expected to include Ukraine, cyberattacks and human rights.Another topic in the spotlight is the recent Ransomware attacks, which will "100%" be on the agenda between the two leaders, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said last week.
