On July 5, about 300 miles to the Northwest of Guam in the Western Pacific Ocean, a monster 'Maria' was born.

Super Typhoon Maria was awarded the named 'Monster', because it underwent rapid intensification, developing into the equivalent of a strong Category 17 hurricane, capable of maximum sustained winds of 209 mph.

As we can see from the chart, Maria jumps 5 level in less than 2 days.

There is no doubt that Maria has already become the most powerful typhoon of 2018. It has revolved quickly and repeatedly, and increasingly forcefully around its own axis.

The powerhouse storm may threaten China’s East coast this week.

Due to the powerful subtropical temperatures that influence it path, Maria is most likely to land in coastal areas in the middle of Fujian province or south Zhejiang province during the daytime on July 11. Showers are expected to hit Shanghai on Wednesday and Thursday, according to China’s National Meteorological Center.

Maria is a relatively huge typhoon, and is forecast to show influence from July 9. After the initial contact with land (where it will be weakened), Maria is forecast to move Northwest, posing a possible threat to Shanghai, Taiwan, Fujian, Zhejiang and Jiangxi on the way, until it downgrades to a tropical depression on July 12.

Shangai, Fujian, Zhejiang 10 Day Weather

Strong rainstorms will hit Southern China, which is including Taiwan, Guangdong province, Jiangxi, and Hunan from July 10 till July 12, especially the coast. Because of the external influence of Maria aside from strong winds and rain, from July 8, the temperature will become very hot!

How does it feel if a grade 17 typhoon is coming?

 Let's see its power:

Grade 4: Moderate breeze.

Grade 8: Gale force winds. Branches are broken, and there is resistance for people moving forward against the winds.

Grade 10: The wind howls and storms arrive. A medium ship can be covered by high waves. It's uncommon on land, but it can damage structure if it reaches them.

Grade 14: Severe hurricane/ severe typhoon, with a very high wave level. It will struggle to emerge onto land, where it can wreak havoc.

What about grade 17???

How to stay safe during a super typhoon:

1. Don't leave the house unless absolutely necessary.

2. Do not use gas or electrical appliances that have been flooded.

3. Stay away from places that will likely be inundated by rising water or waves.

4. When evacuation is necessary, switch off your home's main power supply, place appliances and belongings at higher locations and close windows before leaving.

5. Stay away from hanging wires and unstable structures (damaged houses, bridges, ports near rough waters, etc).

People like traveling or enjoying beach time during summer, but we should take weather warnings seriously. If a typhoon is coming, stay safe instead of insisting on diving or swimming it is much too dangerous to do so.
