TJDW 同济大学设计创意学院 2022-08-28

 Pan-Tongji Design Week 2021

A New Landscape

2021丨11.27-12.31

China finds itself at a historic crossroads. The coming century of its advancement, and its place on the world stage, will depend primarily on our attitude toward growth. At stake is how well we adapt to new growth strategies, implement bold new plans, develop new growth patterns, and promote high-quality development, all in the name of the public good. With these impending challenges, the role of design takes on an unprecedented relevance. At the same time, the challenges for design have become enormously complex and unpredictable. Using design to explore problems and implement solutions is essential, such as when seeking useful applications of cutting-edge technologies for human ends. And yet it seems that what is in fashion is to enthusiastically conjure up fantastical, often unrealistic plans for humanity’s future. Somewhere between these two extremes lies a truer and more profound place for design in the 21st century.

Although the coronavirus pandemic is still ravaging the world, this crisis will eventually subside; new patterns are already taking form, and now design must cope with these seismic shifts. Big data, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and green technologies promise important development opportunities for design-led industrial upgrading as well as for urban transformation. Human beings’ unique capability to design now becomes a collective intelligence integrating humans with the machine world. In order to alleviate the tensions between humanity and nature, and to reverse the estrangement between individual and community, we must embrace a design ethic that emphasizes symbiotic configurations of community, the commons, and property. Meeting deadlines for peak carbon and carbon neutrality cannot be separated from the task of uniting to build a framework of design strategies and actions aimed at preserving communities of life on Earth. Shanghai is currently making every effort to create a model of the “design-driven city.” Maintaining high-quality sustainable development in Shanghai calls for the methods, tools, and practices of complex systems design.

Tongji Design Week 2021 will join hands with Shanghai Design Week to promote the construction of a world-class “design city.” This year’s theme is “A New Landscape,” and the Yangpu Riverbank — where in 2019 President Xi Jinping introduced the important concept of a “People’s City” — is the main venue. Together with the Tongji Knowledge Economy Circle and the Design Industry Cluster Initiative, the program will include more than 30 stimulating activities including forums, exhibitions, lectures, and workshops. As the program’s core academic activity, the 2021 “Emerging Practices” Design Research and Education Conference (EPC 2021) will celebrate its tenth anniversary. This conference will focus on exploring how design research and design education can transcend the differences between the design and other disciplines and propose future-oriented co-evolutionary initiatives.

Tongji Design Week 2021 will be held in December in four locations: the Shanghai Exhibition Center (Friendship Hall), Yangpu Binjiang South (in Yangpu’s historic Hemp Warehouse), Siping Road 1028 (NICE 2035), and also at Tongji University’s School of Design and Innovation.

“Change” is an intrinsic aspect of the practice of design. Design’s essential role is to actively deal with change in the world. New design issues, concepts, practices, tools, and techniques are constantly emerging in response to the constantly changing socio-economic-technical-environmental conditions. Today, we face “the vicissitudes of the coronavirus and the associated problems with economic recovery,” as well as “regional revitalization,” “peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality”—and many other new missions. These are challenges for which design must resolutely respond and pursue change.

More than 30 years ago, design researchers borrowed from traditional evolutionary theory in biology, and what ultimately emerged was the concept of design co-evolutionary. With this formula, the design process considers both problem space and solution space as following concurrent and interactive progress in their mutual development. “Co-evolution” does not merely explain the organic interactions between inquirer and his or her environment during the design process as problem solving; it also reveals qualities of resilience and the powers of transformation as these interactions unfold.

The pursuit of change that drives mankind to move boldly into the future is not limited to the design field: of this we are acutely aware. In fact, the power of design-driven innovation has yet to be fully appreciated by other disciplines. Even within design, the pluralism of research paradigms has led to a lingering ambiguity around design as a discipline. It is now left to design to articulate a more influential and convincing case, both for itself and for allied fields.

The question is, how can design adapt to the radically changing world, perpetually transforming itself as it transforms the world around it? For design practice, research, and education, we can adapt the above evolutionary frame to a related question: what are the designated trajectories of these three co-evolving subfields? We are concerned with how design will interact with other disciplines to  forge new shared paths for knowledge production, intersection, and integration; how innovation in design can enable synergies with innovation in science and technology, culture and art, and business, so as to give greater meaning to the very concept of innovation; how the design industry might assist the manufacturing and service sectors in their transformation and upgrading processes, in order to help bring forth emerging industries; how the training ecosystem in design education might shape future talent, while also attending to its own self-improvement. It is quite irrelevant who among the stakeholders will drive and who will be driven; instead, the program must be, once again, a “co-evolution”: one of reciprocal coordination, interactive feedback, codevelopment—and common progress.

Working Conference of the State Council Discipline Assessment Committee for Design

The 3rd Digital Conservation and Innovation Symposium for Art and Cultural Heritage

- Time:12.21 p.m.

- Location:Aquarium Lecture Hall, College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University/ Online

The theme of the symposium is "AI and Post-epidemic". It is jointly curated by the JALAB Jewelry Accessory Lab and IML Integrated Media Laboratory from College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University. This is a special moment for us all. The pandemic cuts the bonds in the physical world but widens the bridge in the digital world. The overlaps of uncertainty cultivated from deep learning and the epidemic have blurred our expectations for the future. Neural networks have been learning from reality, but also inadvertently surpassing reality. The excitement of breaking through the unknown is intertwined with the anxiety of being replaced, forming complex human emotions; the development of digital technology has not filled the gap between illusion and reality but has piled up new questions. Capital is wrapped in the unknown of cutting-edge technology, chasing an ideal utopia; While those who are addicted to digital pleasure also quietly seek security from retro and nature. The world is becoming more fragmented and technology is becoming more powerful. People who are in the midst of great changes can see the future direction, but can't see it clearly. This year's symposium still focuses on digital innovation and contemporary design, inviting leading scholars all over the world to give speeches. The content covers the following topics:- Traditional cultural renewal, - artificial intelligence and generative design, - digital jewelry and virtual fashion, - immersive media and other topics.

We hope to revisit this "old school" topic from different perspectives such as art and science, tradition and fashion, virtuality and reality, industry and academia. As an essential part of Tongji Design Week, we will provide simultaneous interpretation and online live broadcasts, hope this event will become a stage for mutual learning and discussion for cutting-edge artists and researchers in this field.

Digital Creation Forum

- Time:12.22 p.m.

- Location:Maoma Warehouse, Yangpu Riverside (No.32 Qinghuangdao Rd)

“Can machines think?”It is the question that Turing alluded to in 1950 when talking about machine intelligence, and it comes back again when we talk about AI art. Nowadays, machine has become an indispensable element both in design and production. Then how machine and thinking is represented in digital design and art? This panel talk will discuss the visual creativity of machine from the input and output level, exploring the possibility of machine’s creativity in the future.

1. Data and digital creation

Data is a significant component of artificial intelligence. When training AI, programmers need to feed huge amount of data to a specific neural network. The training data is controllable as human can define its boundary. However, it is also uncontrollable in that the sample size is too large for human beings to scrutinize. Data is thus the “food” for neural network to help it approach the goal gradually in the process of learning and imitating. In this section, we will investigate the significance of big data to digital design — how it helps and controls data visualization, and how digital design innovates based on big data.

2. The logic of digital creation

Nature has its own rules for things, which is not only the law of universe, but also the logic of scientific thinking. Humans use mathematics to interpret laws of nature and realize more complex logic through machines. The creation of machine is the third form of creation besides artifacts and natural beings. Digital design, based on the strong mathematic logic, has the power of evolution, and it can evolve endlessly as nature. This panel will talk about digital creation under human-machine cooperation, and explore the development model in the future.

The meeting will produce a summary report of expert speeches and form a paper. The paper combines PBL (project-based learning) with the development of global steam education and China's steam education practice and design thinking will play a certain role in enriching the phased theoretical achievements.

In the era of intelligence, future oriented education breaks the gap between disciplines and the fence of the school, regards the world as a classroom, and "4C ability", that is, critical thinking, communication ability, collaboration ability, innovation and creativity. As the four abilities necessary for talents in the 21st century, it points out the direction for cultivating talents needed for future social development. STEAM education is an innovative educational concept and measure to explore talent training in the 21st century. It is a whole person education that advocates lifelong learning. It emphasizes breaking the discipline boundary, not being limited by the major, using multi-disciplinary knowledge to solve problems in real life situations, and cultivating students' comprehensive quality in this process. The connotation of steam education coincides with the training requirements of "4C ability", and has become an important educational carrier for the training of "4C ability" in the intelligent era. The meeting will discuss in depth the framework construction and mechanism development of steam education. Under the guidance of "a/Art", explore the perfect combination of Pan Art, humanities and science, technology, engineering and mathematics, construct the top-level framework and thinking logic innovation of steam based on design thinking and project-based learning PBL, and explore new ways of steam education. Being Home Shine Shanghai Exhibition

- Time:12.12-22.01.13

- Location:Cheng Art Museum

- Host:College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University

「Being Home」

Zhai(宅), as a verb, is dwelling.

Zhai(宅), as a noun, is home.

Zhai(宅), as an adjective, is being at home

Zhai has been widely discussed as a subculture in recent years. In 2020, Zhai has become a must instead of a choice because of the COVID-19 pandemic. When Zhai has become the collective experience instead of “busy running out”, many designers start to think about

how to redefine and establish “Zhai” from a more positive point of view.

From the beginning of 2020, in addition to the exiting meaning, Zhai has been used to describe the status of being at home, and the interpretation of its connotation has never been so creative.

With all the meaning of Zhai, the concept of Jia (home, family) is always the centre and core. While it might appear as Zhai, family, home, loved ones, furniture, or even the creation at home are actually behind it.

The redefined Zhai is no longer just about objects or space, but has become a relationship between people and people or objects, a way of thinking, or a collective memory.

The pandemic will be over someday, but there will never be an end to the exploring aboutZhai. Zhai will always be with us as long as home is. Design for Zhai is actually design for home and family.

Cities are where most of the population growth will occur, wealth will be created, energy will be consumed, and CO2 will be generated. How cities develop over the next twenty years will largely determine our ability to address the grand societal challenges of this era, from climate change to public health. Fundamental new approaches to urban design and new high-performance systems are required.

Unfortunately, current approaches to urban design and urban infrastructure are inadequate to meet this challenge. Planning decisions that determine how hundreds of billions of dollars are deployed are made without the data and evidence needed to actually predict urban performance and complex human dynamics.
